Abstract: A study of the journalistic controversies in 1908 and 1909 about the literary language of Valencian writers. The participation of outstanding men of letters and the discursive mechanism of the controversy give to this fact an interest that goes beyond its value as a mere sociolinguistic document.

This article describes the process by which the Nou Diccionari Normatiu de la Llengua Catalana (NDNLC) has been made; this dictionary brings up to date and regularizes Pompeu Fabra’s Diccionari General de la Llengua Catalana (DGLC), which implies, on the one hand, adding to the dictionary new words brought about by different social habits and by the progress of Science and technology, and, on the other hand, bringing the contents of the dictionary up to date. This project has been carried out in three different phases. The first consisted in creating a general Computer data base (BDOL) which contains, besides the DGLC, words belonging both to the common language and to specific fields; in this first phase a study of the DGLC was also carried out, with two aims: a) to analyse the text itself and in doing so select whatever Information might be considered obsolete today, and b) to find out the criteria which Fabra used to make the dictionary, which are implicit in the text. In the second phase the lexicographic criteria by which the dictionary was to be made were established, its entries (both words and phrases) were selected, the old articles were revised and new ones were created. Finally, in the third phase the data base specifically for the NDNLC was created; this contains all the Information of the Nou Diccionari Normatiu de la Llengua Catalana, organised into articles.

A monolingual dictionary offers word definitions. A bilingual dictionary provides equivalences between a source language and a target one. It relates the words in the source language to some sort of definition by synonymy, with a different phonetics. Can there be wholly satisfactory equivalences between the linguistic units in one language and those in another one? Does this question relate in any sense to the notion of linguistic universal? With respect to denotation, anything that can be expressed in one language can undoubtedly be said in another. The original cultural homogeneity between many languages (for example, the Indoeuropean ones) makes easy for them to syntonize with one another with respect to the universals. The criteria that are used to choose and provide a hierarchy of lemmas with their different meanings in a monolingual dictionary can be easily applied to bilingual dictionaries. The number of entries usually depends on the greater lexical offer of the source language because of the interest that can raise in the transfer to the target language. However, should any «speech» fact be reflected in a bilingual dictionary? Users can expect a good bilingual dictionary to offer a large amount of vocabulary, which is usual and genuine in a variety of registers, with a detailed semantic description of every word and a collection of the idiomatisms in which the word is involved. It is also expected that the dictionary user can understand and expression in a particular language and express it in another one without altering their meaning content.

The aim of this paper is an attempt to revise the role of dictionaries in professional text supervising processes. Under the frame of text linguistics, we first explain how correction tasks are conditioned by text typology. Next, we study the macro structure of dictionaries (in order to consider what kind of lexicographical works are closer to the corrector needs) and then we study their micro structure (in order to set up what kind of information might be relevant for correction tasks). In conclusion, we finally State some lacks of current dictionaries for correction purposes, and we settle some aspects of text revision which are not expected to be solved with dictionary consultation.

This article aims at establishing a typology of lexicographic definitions by means of the study of the definitions found in Pompeu Fabra’s Diccionari General de la Llengua Catalana in nouns, verbs and adjectives. Several typologies based on different criteria are arrived at: in the first place, the difference between synthetic and periphrastic definitions is established; this classification is based on the amount of words used in the definition. In the second place, the typology which comprises substantial and relational definitions is explained; it was established by Rey-Debove (1967) and it is based on the metalanguage used in the definition. And thirdly, a classification within substantial periphrastic definitions is established, based on the defining words used: lexical and semo-componential definitions.

The Catalan language currently has a series of terminological resources at its disposal which award it a privileged position compared to other languages of a similar size. This situation also allows for a fitting response to new terminological requeriments arising as a result of technological development. Worthy of mention in this respect is the existence of TERMCAT, an organisation which has been a decisive factor in the promotion of terminological work. This has come about by means of the adoption of modern methodology adapted to international standards, the training of experts in terminology and the creation and publication of dictionaries. Mention should also be made of the excellent work carried out in this field by the universities and governments in Catalonia, the Community of Valencia and Andorra.
