Foreign Language Acquisition usually considers that authentic input can be too complex for the learner, especially at the early and intermediate stages of learning, and that it is preferable to offer them modified input, easier to understand and thus to acquire. The most usual modification type is “simplification”, although lately the modification called “elaboration” has been a preferred one in didactics. Our aim is to study if elaborated input is better understood than simplified input, and which type of comprehension is enhanced: literal or inferential. We have carried out a research study, with Spanish intermediate French students, comparing the comprehension of an authentic text and this same text modified through elaboration. Our results show that the elaborated text is better understood than the authentic one, and for the two comprehension types. Elaboration seems to be a better modification process than simplification, as it maintains the style of authentic texts.

Mes soixante ans and their political and literary references: the Constance de Salm memoirs in verse
Romera Pintor, Ángela Magdalena
Asociación de Francesistas de la Universidad Española
Resumen
This article studies Constance de Salm’s memoirs, published in 1833 and entitled Mes soixante ans. In her memoirs –composed in verse– the author recalls her feminist discourse in support of women’s rights, as she did all her life. We will unveil the political and literary references of the poetic discourse, which recalls the more significant events in France in a period of great change: from the end of the 18th century and through the early part of the 19th century. We will pay particular attention to the Empire period, with which Constance de Salm’s works have been consistently associated.

Resumen
This article focuses on the way to teach French Literature to university students with only an intermediate level of language. We begin by considering the implications of what has always been a key factor needed to fully understand a literary text : an adequate command of the language and the ability to grasp its stylistic features. To solve the problem we are faced with, we have opted for the Reception Theory as it provides a more accessible approach to the literary documents, and at the same time it allows us to cater for the cognitive and aesthetic processes of the reader.

Resumen
This paper examines intercultural relationships between so-called peripheries, more exactly between the Basque Country and Belgium, in late 19th century and early 20th century. Divided into three parts, this paper analyses the Basque translation of Hendrik Conscience, investigates (often unknown) connections between Miguel de Unamuno and the (French and Dutch) literatures of Belgium, and offers a new regard on the artistic and literary exchanges between Émile Verhaeren and Darío de Regoyos.
