The news about Peru that reached Europe right after the conquest has always been an object of study and reflection. The first documents that describe Peru and its treasures were soon translated into Italian, shortly after their arrival to Spain; some of them were lost in their original form and remain available in Italian only. These documents played a major role in building the image of Peru along the sixteenth century. The paper is about the Cajamarca events described in those documents.

Vista del amanecer en el trópico narrates Cuban history through its most important steps. The book is composed by 101 fragments or “viñetas”; some of them are descriptions of images (lithographies, drawings, paintings, photographs) related to characters or events of that history. This article presents the results of a research aimed at identifying those “absent images” (a subject that critics have up to now ignored), discovering the sources exploited by the author Cabrera Infante, highlighting the discourse strategies underlying their verbal representation and, finally, assessing how the image selection and their representation contribute to shape the vision of cuban history that comes to light from the book.

In 1993, Augusto RoaBastos published El fiscal, a novel in which he revisits a moment in Paraguay’s contemporary history, offering, from a contemporary perspective opposed to Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorship, a view to la Guerra Grande, marshall SolanoLópez and Doña Elisa Lynch. History and caracters shaped to some Félix Moral taste, get their final shape in an unfinished script, faithfull to the deeds, as describing another version of the reality for a failed film production about the same theme and a melodramatic atmosphere. That configuration, as well as a third one as an historical point of view from R. F. Burton, can be seen in Mathias Grünewald’s paintings and Cándido López’s works. All as a fiction that includes a testimonial nature, literary dimension and symbolic value.

One of most important features of Neobarrocco is its cultural relation with images. This article, basing itself on Michel Foucault’s analysis of Las Meninas and on the Bolívar Echeverría’s Ethos barroco , aims to analyze the relation between image, the object of the portrait and observer in the poetry of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Our objective is to understand as text puts that relation into poetry without reducing itself to a simple caption.

The present study performs a thorough tour of the whole of Cortázar’s narrative work (novels and stories, not excluding some "micro-stories") to define the place and meaning that references to money and consumption have in this work. The reflection is triggered by the discussion of a "sentence" issued in 1974 by Ricardo Piglia ("Cortázar doesn’t speak about money"). This paper tries to show that this alleged silence is not so total. The consequences of that categorical denial present an image of Cortázar’s work that suit, at least, to be reviewed. For that purpose it is also given attention to some Cortázar’s poems, closely related to his fictions, which put in evidence that the Argentine author made of the consumer society and its distortions a recurring subject of his writing.

This article runs through some of the major literary works in prose and poetry published during the past few decades in Cuba, both from recognized authors and from younger writers under forty years old. In regards to the latter group, this article essentially comments on their storybooks and conducts a detailed study of their chosen themes, narrative style, and literary resources to develop an overall characterization of this specific cohort. This analysis seeks to demonstrate the pronounced interest in understanding the periods of Cuban history that shaped the lives of these authors, be they the first years of the Revolution, the Nineties −which led to many shifts− or contemporary history. Keeping in mind the sociocultural frame in which they were published, the examination of these various texts provides an updated view of the main debates and challenges facing the cultural sphere in Cuba today.

The history of a society is, in some measure, that of its differed or unconcluded debates because the topics that are object of silence, forgetfulness, or uncomfortable negotiation among parts that are recognized different, many times reflects the obstacles that the individual subjects and communities must save to be integrated. The racial question is like a hank of complicated relations that mark transversely the history of Cuba. From there this essay seeks to value how much the culture and the politics have influenced in the Cuban debate on the racial problem, highlighting the confluences and divergences of the speeches that, along the time, have built different layers, groups and sectors of the Cuban society.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the most relevant Cuban historiography production in the last three decades, from the transformations that the island itself has actually lived in this period and which have been reflected in the professional work of historians. Overcome the rigidity and stagnation of the 70s, from the second half of the 80s until the present, the Cuban historiography shows a thematic diversity, an epistemological dynamism and willingness to update his speech, making it one of the areas of greatest intellectual activity and influence in contemporary society in Cuba.
