Through the death records’ analysis of Moquegua, Tacna, Altos de Arica and Tarapacá settlements, it is aimed to observe the close relationship that exists between epidemics, natural (primarily climatic) and social phenomena, as well as evaluate their impact on mortality. The similarities detected between the studied localities and the regional context, especially in terms of the effects caused by certain natural phenomena and other epidemics on the population, are going to account for both the spaces proximity and the narrow relation among urban and rural spaces in this vast territory belonging to the Andeanspace of the Arica-Potosí axis.

In the mid-twentieth century, the Chilean writer Joaquín Edwards Bello offered his memories about the Pompeian house, a luxurious residence in Valparaíso, where he lived during his youth. Indeed, it is a building that remains to this day and whose characteristics evoke the houses of the Roman aristocracy in Classical Antiquity. Based on the verification of those elements inspired by the architecture and ornamentation of the ancient towns of Pompeii, this article reflects on the meaning and symbolism of that influence, in relation to the social and cultural context of Valparaíso, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Based on a corpus of 33 wills written by members of the Cajamarca indigenous elite between 1565 and 1758, this paper analyses the different ways of naming this locality, taking into account its growing importance during the two centuries covered by these documents. Our results allow us to assess and develop Argouse’s (2015) proposal with data from various notaries and a wider chronological scope. Although one can observe a clear predominance of villa over pueblo during the whole seventeenth century, the lack of reference to the type of urban entity that Cajamarca was gathers momentum at the end of that period and during the eighteenth century. We interprete these data in the light of the particular changes that Cajamarca underwent regarding its urban status during the colonial period.

This article studies the Indians who provided firewood, charcoal and wood to the cities and mines of New Spain. It tries to show that this trade, despite its unassuming appearance, was very relevant in productive terms, and its shortage could have serious consequences in daily life and the smooth running of various productive activities. The text describes the characteristics and conditions of the production and argues that the transit of men and merchandises had an impact both in the cities and the towns of origin. It also proposes that this trade cannot be understood simply in economic terms, since it reflected the parallel dualities of country/ city and Indian/Spanish.

This article examines the process of building the culture of the wine and grape harvest festivals in Chile between 1930 and 1970 through the popular Topaze and En Viaje magazines. Both magazines contributed to the evaluation of the festivals and celebrations of wine. On the one hand, Topaze represented the roots that viticulture had in Chilean society and culture, symbolized in the chuico (popular bottle) and chingana (popular festival place). On the other, En Viaje promoted the grape harvest as a tourist attraction and alternative for rural economic development based on ancestral heritage. A failed attempt to organize a national festival is detected in 1950, following the model of Argentina. Finally, an alternative model was imposed, better rooted in the cultural landscapes of the Central Valley, consisting of multiple autonomous celebrations instead of a centralized party.

The article analyzes the collaboration provided by the National Astronomical Observatory to the Chilean State during the “Cuestión de Límites” in the 1893-1901 period. It is proposed that the assistance of the Astronomical Observatory was highly relevant to the precision’s works of the Limits Commission. The main sources are the protocols signed by Chile and Argentina, the technical documents published by the Limits Commission and the institutional documents of the Astronomical Observatory. Combined, these sources enable us to understand what types of works the Limits Commission had to carry out and the specific ways in which the Observatory cooperated. The results show that the main assistance of the National Astronomical Observatory was in the provision of specialized personnel in geographic works, adjustment of precision instruments and determination of strategic geographic coordinates.
