Biomass models are key tools for estimating carbon in agroecosystems. This research was conducted in Caquetá, Colombia, in plantations and agroforestry systems. A total of 41 trees of Hevea brasiliensis and 40 of Theobroma grandiflorum were sampled to estimate the above-ground biomass (Ab); and 19 and 12 trees, respectively, were excavated to estimate the below-ground biomass (Bb). The models were adjusted based on the determination coefficient (R2), the adjusted R2, and Akaike’s and the Bayesian information criteria. The recommended models for Ab in H. brasiliensis and T. grandiflorum were Ln(Ab)=-2.99+2.72*Ln(DBH) and Ln(Ab)=-2.59+2.48*Ln(D30), respectively (Ab: kg.tree-1; DBH: diameter at breast height in cm; D30: trunk diameter at a 30 cm height). Additionally, models based on diameter and height were developed, as well as others based on the crown area. These models constitute an advancement in improving estimations of biomass and carbon, thus reaching Tier 2 in research and mitigation projects.

The objective of this research was to assess the use of unsaturated water flow in terms of soil water evaporation, which was determined by evaluating some soil hydraulic parameters in different soil textures. The results show that the predicted values of these parameters, which were obtained through inverse modeling with the HYDRUS-1D software and depend on the change of the volumetric water content, exhibited a significant agreement with the measured values from laboratory or field simulation data for soil water evaporation at 5. 10. 20. and 45 days of measurement. At the same time, inverse simulation was conducted on soil hydraulic parameters obtained from a 5-day laboratory soil evaporation period to predict field infiltration values and water retention curve, which showed a significant agreement with measured values for all soil textures.

Jagua (Genipa americana L.) is widely distributed throughout the Americas. It has been used since ancient times due to the pigments extracted from its fruit. This study aimed to evaluate the vegetative growth of five Jagua accessions by adjusting non-linear models to dasometric growth variables. The accessions (Porce, Chigorodó, San Carlos, San Luis, and Vigía del Fuerte in Antioquia) were collected in the central-western region of Colombia. The growth, determined through plant height and stem diameter (at 0.10 and 1.30 m), was evaluated for 262 weeks in the municipality of Amalfi. A descriptive analysis of the growth behavior of each accession was performed, and the fit of four nonlinear functional models was evaluated. An influence of the accession factor on growth was found due the different growth rates. The Weibull model was the one with the best fit and predictive capacity, which confirmed the differences between accessions.

Environmental conflicts have been growing in number in Colombia and in Latin America, and different public policies aimed at their resolution have emerged. Based on a literature review, we investigated how ‘positive change’ has been conceived in the country regarding environmental conflicts, and which conditions have been considered favorable for these changes. The concepts of resolution and transformation, although with differing conceptual origins and political implications, could be considered to be complementary in practice. Among the factors favorable to positive change in environmental conflicts, we found the strength of community organizations, the establishment of sustained dialogues that allow building trust, legal instruments that guarantee social participation in environmental decisions, and the social appropriation of different forms of knowledge. We conclude with some recommendations for the Regional Centers of Environmental Dialogue proposed by the Colombian government in 2018.

Tropical dry forests (TDFs) are one of the most threatened ecosystems in Colombia, with remnants concentrated in riparian forests. This research studied the vegetation of a riparian forest from a TDF remnant in the Magdalena River’s upper basin using transects at three stations along the La Avería stream (Paicol, Huila). 199 individuals distributed in 47 species were found. The floristic composition was similar to that of other TDFs, while the number of individuals was lower. Fabaceae was the most represented family, and Zygia longifolia and Guadua angustifolia were the species with the highest Importance Value Index (IVI). It was concluded that the forest has been subjected to anthropic disturbances and is in an early successional stage. In addition, differences were found in the degree of conservation of the forest between the three sampled stations.

The influence of spacing on the estimation of the leaf area index (LAI) in Eucalyptus tereticornis and Eucalyptus saligna plantations was evaluated. Three spacings per species were analyzed: 1.0 x 2.0 m, 1.0 x 1.0 m, and 1.0 x 0.5 m. Dasometric variables and the LAI were measured with two indirect methods (LICOR 2000 and digital hemispheric photography, DHP) and a direct method. The results showed no differences between species. On the other hand, spacing significantly influenced the diameter (less spacing, less diameter) and the LAI (less spacing, higher LAI), with variations from 2.11 to 3.96 m2.m-2. An evaluation of the indirect methods showed that, by reducing the spacing, the bias in the estimation increased. FDH showed greater accuracy and tended to underestimate the LAI by 7%. In contrast, LICOR 2000 showed a high bias, with a tendency to overestimate the LAI by up to 30%.

Tree growth has great relevance in mitigating climate change. It has been suggested that, in tropical forests, growth is related to edaphic fertility. Given that the Colombian Pacific is a rainy region with nutrient-poor soils, the way in which edaphic conditions explain tree growth was evaluated. To this effect, the tree diameter growth (CDA) was determined at the level of plots, species, and ecological groups, and it was related to the physical and chemical variables of the soil. It was observed that the CDA in trees with low wood density was positively correlated with organic matter (MO), nitrogen, and sand, and it was negatively correlated with with P, silt, and clay. The Fabaceae family was positively correlated with pH, MO, nitrogen, magnesium, and sand, and negatively so with the effective cation exchange capacity (CICE), silt, clay, and aluminum. Consequently, a multiple nutritional limitation was corroborated, which highlights the fact that growth can be conditioned by abundant nutrients in the soil, not only by their limiting scarcity.

The following article analyzes the socioeconomic factors and their relationship with productivity in the Catatumbo region, an area historically affected by different agents of the armed conflict who used the territory for the illicit cultivation of narcotics or contraband. This the research presents the socioeconomic panorama of the region and reveals new economic and social opportunities for the region. Additionally, this research is developed through a qualitative methodology with an inductive method and descriptive type of study, whose purpose is to specify the variables: index of unsatisfied basic needs, territorial organization, armed conflict, economy, public finances, health, housing, public services, education, environment, measurement of municipal performance, demographics and population. Finally, it is concluded that the Catatumbo region is highly rich in natural resources, which provides a great national and international commercial opportunity for its agricultural production; however, this opportunity may be missed due to the lack of knowledge of the farmers and/or productive associations of Catatumbo about the productive potential of the region.

Sustainable supply chain management practices have been developed globally for some time with the aim of incorporating green concerns into business, lessening the unintended destructive effects on the environment in the manufacturing and purchasing process. At the same time, circular economies push the boundaries of environmental sustainability by highlighting the notion of innovative goods, creating a viable relationship between ecosystems and economic growth. Through a systematic review of the literature, this document identifies four study trends (factors, barriers, practices, and performance) when applying a circular economy in the textile and clothing industry. A conceptual model based on these four study trends is established, illustrating the relationship between them. Highlighting the challenges of applying the circular economy and offering some suggestions for managers in the textile and clothing industry. Finally,  several directions for future research are concluded.
