Telenovelas function as elements of representation of reality and have been important in the configurations of gender and roles in society. With respect to parenting, they have also contributed to the transmission of practices and role expectations of both mothers and fathers. This could be of concern if, from this, they perpetuate social stereotypes that influence daily lives of viewers, their roles and behaviors. This article examines gender differences in the representations of parenthood in Chilean telenovelas. The analysis of interactions between mothers, fathers and sons in three telenovelas, broadcast on three Chilean open television channels, premiered between 2007 and 2017 and rebroadcast in 2020 indicates that, although the telenovelas show some gender transformations in Chilean society, such as the inclusion of women in the labor market and the greater involvement of fathers in parenting, gender stereotypes are maintained.

This article exposes the development of the first state radio station in the country, Radio Nacional de Chile, during the dictatorship (1973-1990). Created by the Military Junta, it seeks to describe the use made of this station for government communications, as well as its influence on the national radio during this period. With a theoretical framework of a flexible nature, with contributions from communications, aesthetics and history, and a mixed methodology, an object of study unpublished until now is realized. Despite the progressive distancing that the state apparatus took from culture during the military regime, mainly due to the growing influence of neoliberalism, this was not complete, as demonstrated in the case of radio communications. These would have been quickly used as strategic pieces by the authorities, for their exercise of power and governability of the population, as well as for their own image, both inside and outside the country.

Linguistic minorities develop media in their own language facing the inadequacy of public policies and the poor interest of the private media sector. This article explores community radio’s role in normalizing a minority language. We take free radios in the Catalan space of communication during the early stages of language recovery as a case of study. A sample of territorially representative stations is set up for the period 1977-1989 and a questionnaire is delivered to active members of those stations during those years. Analysis of the data shows that these radios favored linguistic normalization, although the use of Catalan was not homogeneous among territories and subtypes of radio.

Multi-platform radio incorporates new channels of communication and contact with its audiences within its artistic and commercial universe: streaming such as Spotify, YouTube, and radio aggregators, combined with social media. This article analyzes the decision-making process of radio stations (online and hertzian) to manage their services of streaming, external to their own channels. Particularly, the study compares 30 stations, located in four Argentine cities. We conducted a content analysis and semi-structured interviews with key sources. We suggest how to classify such multiplatform strategies. The most important broadcasters conceived these platforms as tools for competitive but not complementary purposes. Digital media appear as an extension of radio stations’ lives and narratives. Consequently, both informative and advertising strategies are the ones radio stations deployed the most.

Local television, also called proximity television, promotes democratic and participatory communication that makes local territories visible and gives value to the local, communal or regional identity. This article analyzes the relationship between the institutional mediations of local television and the production of proximity content and identifies successes and threats. We conducted in-depth interviews with producers of local television in Coquimbo Region (Chile), which includes urban and rural populations, with cities that are difficult to access geographically and far from the political center, both regional and capital. The results show that the municipalities are the institutions that are most closely and frequently linked with local television channels, since they are media used to broadcast public initiatives of all kinds, but they also put on screen the voice of the authorities, weakening -on some occasions - Information independence and pluralism.

This article examines the representation of immigrants in the media discourse during 2017 and 2018 in Chile. Based on a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) applied to Publimetro, a free-circulation newspaper in the Chilean capital, this study does not reveal the openly aggressive representation of immigration but rather demonstrates that the daily press represents migrants as a collective of subjects that the State has to welcome, reinforcing the approach referred to public policy actions towards migrant communities and not their contributions to the receiving country. Therefore, the dominant use of representations of migrants only as receivers reinforces the stereotype of them as dependent on government resources. Similarly, the use of the specific term on a nationality refers primarily to Haitian residents, giving them a particular place in the terminology of migrants in the newspaper, turning skin color into a distinctive sign of migration in Chile.

This musicological study addresses the musicalization in Juan Marino’s El siniestro Dr. Mortis, a Chilean radio play, on its last phase (1960-1980). The objectives were: to characterize the genre of "horror music", to clarify the musicalization process of the radio drama El siniestro Dr. Mortis in that period, to identify the title and origin of the musical pieces used in the different episodes and to propose both hermeneutical hypotheses and projections based on the information found. The theoretical frame incorporated several authors, especially K. J. Donnelly and his chacterization of terror music in films, the methodology included interview, bibliographical research and listening of a wide musical repertoire. A peculiar work modality was discovered in the edition of this radio play and the use of pieces coming from concert music, film music and music libraries.

This article studies the hoaxes that accompany the denialist hashtags #nofueron30000 and #nofueron30mil in Argentina. A quantitative content analysis of 223 disinformative posts published on Instagram from February 6, 2020, to February 6, 2022 was carried out, complementing the examination using a qualitative technique on the most popular posts (n=52). The results show that misleading visual content about historical memory is not the one that receives the most interaction. As a strategy of disinformation, hyperpartisan manipulation is used and videos and “memes” are exploited for ridiculing its critics, with a high level of incivility that contributes to polarization. Finally, they appropriate hashtags from opposition movements to produce disinformation narratives.

In convergence between history and media studies, this article analyzes a set of journalistic accusations and parliamentary debates around the infiltration of Peronist propaganda on the Radio El Mercurio station during 1953. The article details some of the main public controversies that arose from the ownership of the station and the broadcast of favorable news about the government of Juan Perón in Argentina (1946-1955) spread by the radio station, which faced a judicial process and an accusation by the Chilean Congress in the context of a broader concern about the interference of Peronism in Chile. The study identifies one of the first political disputes of radio and illustrates the consolidation of the medium, going from a daily entertainment and technological innovation to becoming an active platform for political articulation.
