Resumen
At the turn of the 19th century, Rosny aîné was a writer known for his participation in the Manifeste des Cinq in 1887, and for writing a series of novels marked by the evocation of revolt, a theme often present in his social novels: Bilatéral, mœurs révolutionnaires in 1887, Les Âmes perdues in 1899, La Vague rouge, roman de mœurs syndicalistes in 1910. Behind the plots, which ‘vary in interest’, the author sets out to analyse what was being debated at the time: social issues and political context. The characters he portrayed in his stories rebel against their personal situation. They oppose certain aspects of society and send out a message; their rebellion is also a sign of their freedom. In addition to the novels, there are many prefaces that introduce the author’s arguments and reflections on revolt. From the necessary preconditions for revolt (humiliation and submission) to its political and moral dimensions, the prefaces provide an ‘accompanying discourse’ on revolt. In this way, the novels and the prefaces help to reveal the importance of the motif that gives meaning to the works of Rosny aîné.

Resumen
In 1872, Léonie Rouzade, a feminist socialist, published Le Monde renversé (The World Turned Upside Down). A paradoxical utopia, this novel is about Célestine Chopin, a young woman who manages to become a sultana and who decides to turn the world upside down, forcing men to fulfil women’s duties. Depicting a revolt against patriarchy, this feminist novel is also a rebellion against power and the literary institution, dominated by a male elite reifying women. Thus, Léonie Rouzade offers us a satire of society and a critique of the male gaze. Nonetheless, it would be a mistake to think that this activist wrote her novel with the aim of reversing gender roles. Criticizing both men and women, she intended not only to provoke a reaction from both halves of humankind but also to propose a new society. Neither matriarchal nor patriarchal, the ideal world imagined by the author is entirely egalitarian: it is androgynous.

Resumen
Revolt is the leitmotif in Octave Mirbeau’s novel L’Abbé Jules. By means of following the story line and placing the occurrences of the word in their narrative context, the article looks at the lexical repetitions and its derivations. The recurrences of “revolt” throw light on protagonists: their psychology, their path, their interactions. The study focuses in particular on the relationship between revolt and the eponymous character, as set in a historical, religious and cultural context. The relationship with religion is at the heart of a significant revolt by Abbé Jules, exposing in the process the contradictions that characterise him. Far from being a mere ‘ornament’, revolt is a cross-cutting theme that reveals semantic and thematic networks. These go beyond fiction to disclose Mirbeau’s critical view of contemporary society: the family, the Church and human behaviour.

Resumen
This article analyses the fifteenth volume of Les Rougon-Macquart, La Terre (The Earth), from a political perspective. Zola sets its plot against the backdrop of an agricultural crisis that affects the living conditions of the peasant class. He raises the question of the viability of a “Jacquerie”, which would put an end to their misery, in the second half of the 19th century. The uprising, however, never materialised. In Zola’s work, the peasants have no desire to act collectively. The novel is an in-depth analysis of the causes of disunity of forces. The introduction of land redistribution during the Revolution and the ineffectiveness of revolutionary discourse, which is derided, appear to be the main reasons for the wait-and-see attitude that characterises the peasants. Yet, this does not extinguish the spirit of revolt: the subversive characters resort to alternative means to ensure that the protest discourse continues to circulate.

Resumen
Le Désarroi, Remy de Gourmont’s novel published only posthumously, expresses a revolt typical of the ‘fin de siècle’, permeated with anarchy, Nietzschean individualism and esotericism. Written in the years from 1894 to 1899, not long after the affair provoked by “Joujou patriotism”, the novel is a reaction to several elements. Firstly, the expression of revolt in the subject itself can be viewed as a protest by means of an anarchist attack and justification for violence. Further on, by its ethical, aesthetic and stylistic characteristics, Le Désarroi appears to be an experimental text written in reaction to Zola’s naturalism and symbolism. The different possible levels of reading the novel set it apart from other Gourmont’s works and confer on it a special place in the study of the evolution of the genre at the end of the nineteenth century.

Resumen
This article analyses the transition from the naturalist to the thesis novel and, therefore, investigates the transformation of the novel at the end of the nineteenth century. We propose to begin by examining the different steps of that transition, or rather that ‘revolution’ (combating the decadent spirit, admitting the predominance of religion, advocating greater openness to humanity, taking a greater interest in the social and moral problems of the time). We will then attempt to answer the following question: is the transition from the naturalist novel to the thesis novel not a sign of the novel evolution (emergence of an ideological and utopian discourse, questioning of the reader, didactic tone), and does it not, consequently, reflect the transformation of the novel at the turn of the century?

Resumen
In his works, the “petit naturaliste” Robert Caze seems to offer a reader a form somewhere between the short and the long ones: a mixed form able to represent the modest lives depicted in them, lives that cannot be romanticized or novelized. Caze seems to distance himself from the genre of the novel, in particular the great Zolian novel, by borrowing methods specific to the short story, his mixed form being halfway between the short and the long ones. Hence, the novel is, if not undermined, at least questioned and placed at a distance. The novel does not seem to be the genre best suited to convey the voices of banal, mediocre characters, therefore the mixed form is seen as a more effective way of representing nineteenth-century society.
