Resumen
Introduction: The generation of electrical energy constitutes one of the most important indicators of development of a nation. In this process, extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields are generated, which could affect the heart. Objective: To identify the association between global cardiovascular risk and exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in the Health Area November 27, of the Marianao municipality of Havana province, in 2018. The sample consisted of 152 individuals. The cardiovascular risk was determined, according to the Gaziano predictive tables without laboratory. Measurements of magnetic flux densities were made in their homes. It was assessed whether these were associated with the intensity of electricity generation at the neighboring thermoelectric plant and with the overall cardiovascular risk of the residents. Spearman's non-parametric correlation was used. Results: 31,6% of the studied population was evaluated with high and very high cardiovascular risk as a whole. 120 individuals were exposed in their homes to magnetic flux densities between 0 and 0,9 µT. There was a statistically significant correlation between the intensity of the current generated by the industry and the magnetic flux densities in the rooms used to sleep. Conclusions: No association was observed between the cardiovascular risk and the magnetic flux densities measured in the dwellings. Exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields was not a cardiovascular risk factor for the population studied. Introduction: Traumatic injuries of the elbow are very frequent, some of them are difficult to treat and are associated with complications, of which supracondylar fractures of the humerus are one of the most frequent. Objective: To describe the epidemiological behavior of a group of patients with this traumatic disease. Methods: A descriptive observational study was carried out in patients treated at the Dr. Eduardo Agramonte Piña Provincial Pediatric Hospital in the city of Camagüey from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2021 with a total of 48 months. Results: the male-female sex ratio of the 56 patients was 3.3 to 1, the left-right elbow was 1.9 to 1, and the urban rural area was 2.2 to 1. The average age in general was 7.5 years. The average hospital stay was 4.8 days. The extension mechanism was the most frequent finding, as well as grade III fractures. The months of January and July together with the days of Thursday, Friday and Sunday are the ones with the largest number of patients. Closed reduction and percutaneous fixation with Kirschner wires was the most used method in this traumatic entity. Conclusions: Supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children are more frequent in males and in the left elbow. The average age of males is higher than that of females. Rural areas provide the largest number of patients. The most used treatment is surgery and immediate complications are infrequent. Resumen
Introduction: The low concentrations of lipids and the lipoproteins in the burnt patients have been associated with a bad forecast, with a high morbility and mortality. Objective: To determine the influence of serum cholesterol un the clinical evolution of burned patients. Methods: An observational, descriptive study of longitudinal cut was carried out to determine the influence of the serum cholesterol in the clinical evolution of patient burnings in the service of Plastic Surgery and Caumatology of the Hospital Universitary Manuel Ascunce Domenech of the city Camagüey in the period understood since October of the 2019 to September of the 2020. 16 patients were studied, evaluating the severity rate, the changes in the levels of cholesterol, as well as its relation with the sepsis, evolutionary tendency of cholesterol and state to the expenditure of the patients. Results: Between the seven to fourteen days of evolution seventy five percent of the patients had low numbers of cholesterol with a predominance in the critic patients. Of the twelve patients that developed sepsis, more of the sixty eight percent had low numbers of cholesterol; of them five patients were classified as critics so there was a tendency to a deterioration relating to the severity rate. Thirteen of the patients of this series exited live. Conclusions: The serious burns occur with alterations in the metabolism of the lipids. A significant finding was that the patients that developed infection had with low levels of cholesterol. The hypocholesterolaemia was associated to a worse forecast of these patients. Resumen
Introduction: External quality assessment is a procedure that compares the results of several laboratories that analyze the same sample, with the purpose of evaluating analytical performance and assuring quality. Camagüey participated constantly in the external quality assessment program from the beginning until, due to different national and provincial difficulties, said program could not continue. Since then, the provinces quality committee decided to organize assessment alternatives for this purpose. In 2016, a new assessment proposal was applied in clinical laboratories al the primary level of care. Objective: To evaluate the quality of the results obtained in the processing of clinical chemistry components in primary level laboratories in the province of Camagüey. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from September 2017 to July 2018, the universe consisted of all clinical laboratories in the province of Camagüey and a non-probabilistic sample of 14 laboratories was used. Results: The analytical performance of cholesterol, blood-glucose level and creatinine was acceptable and triglycerides were unacceptable. A polyclinic in the municipality of Camagüey showed the lowest percentage of precision and accuracy measurement error. Conclusions: The cholesterols results showed the best performances and the results obtained were more exact than precise in the evaluated components. The participation percentage of laboratories 04 and 09 was high throughout the duration of the study. Resumen
Introduction: Central nervous system infections are an important health problem in all regions of the planet; they represent a challenge for the attending physician, the microbiologist and the epidemiologist, based on an early and correct diagnosis, basic elements for a satisfactory prognosis. Objective: To determine the behavior of bacterial meningoencephalitis in the Province of Camagüey. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective observational study was carried out on the behavior of bacterial meningoencephalitis in Camagüey province during the period 2016-2020. The study universe consisted of all cases (128) diagnosed with bacterial meningoencephalitis, attended in Hospitals with more than 100 beds during the period from January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2020. Results: The year 2017 turned out to be the one with the largest number of cases, the predominant causal agent was Streptococcus pneumoniae; pediatric ages were those with the highest incidence, especially those under 1 year of age and males. The cardinal symptom in the study was fever, and pneumococcus was the most lethal causative agent. Conclusions: The early diagnosis of bacterial meningoencephalitis leads to less lethality and therefore fewer sequelae.
