This article analyses the changes made to Lisbon’s street names during the revolutionary period in Portugal, spanning April 1974 to November 1975. These changes are framed in the context of memory studies, in order to understand the image of the city which the Toponymy Commission intended to project. The first section provides an overview of street name changes in Lisbon during Portugal’s politically volatile twentieth century. The second sets up the theoretical framework that guides the analysis. The third and central section of this paper focusses on the work of Lisbon’s City Hall regarding street name changes in the first year after the Revolution of April 25, 1974. As I will argue, the Toponymy Commission was by no means complacent with the dictatorship. However, far from supporting the revolutionary course of the PREC, their members were rather engaged in maintaining a balance and avoiding ideological struggles, setting a stable foundation for democratic and consensual politics of memory.

The Commission of the Black Book on the Fascist Regime was created in 1977, in Portugal, to investigate the abuses perpetrated during the dictatorship that started in May 1926 and ended with the military coup of April 25, 1974. It was proposed by Mário Soares, the former socialist Prime Minister, as a way to fight the resurgence of fascist ideologies. The National Commission on the Disappeared (CONADEP), established in Argentina in 1983, is known as the first truth commission and comparative studies do not recognize the existence of a commission in Portugal. This investigation states, however, that the Commission of the Black Book must be considered a pioneering truth commission in the transitional justice processes of the third wave of democratizations.

This paper analyses the correspondence José Enrique Rodó and Rufino Blanco Fombona exchanged over two decades (1897-1916). The majority of those documents are unpublished and treasured in the José Enrique Rodó Collection in the Literary Archive of the National Library of Uruguay. The analysis of this correspondence sheds light on the impact of the letters in the genesis and development of their intellectual and literary work, that is, in the collaborative activities that these two interlocutors carried out, in spite of the distance.

After an overview through the processes of implantation of missionary structures among Amazonian populations, this article directs attention to the process of establishment of the Catholic Church in the Purus basin (Amazonas, Brazil) and its consolidation at the beginning of the 20th century, in the middle of the rubber crisis. In this trajectory of interactions between missionary activities and indigenous populations, the figure of the Spanish religious Isidoro Irigoyen, who worked in the region for 30 years (1938-1968), stands out during the socalled “Second Rubber Boom” and the subsequent decline of the Amazonian rubber market. The access to his diaries and reports on desobrigas –catechizing expeditions of indigenous and riverine people in the inner rainforest communities–, together with the reading of ecclesial and journalistic records, lead us to some keys to understand the dynamics of Catholicism during the later rubber boom in the region of the Purus River.

The first decades of the twentieth century in Argentina saw the confluence of two processes that marked the field of plastic arts: the question about the characteristics of a “national art” and the inclusion of the applied arts in local aesthetic debates. Although independent, both had a fruitful dialogue; we believe that this confluence boosted their development, since it enabled a productive review of an available past to create a “national art” and, at the same time, expanded the visibility of applied arts from which to build a “native ornamental style”. This paper aims to trace the debates and critical texts, the decorative arts manuals and exhibited works, in a scenario where modernity and tradition approached each other in a unique way.

The trilogy Memórias. Um Combate pela Liberdade is the testimony of Edmundo Pedro (1918-2018), a Portuguese anti-fascist who was imprisoned, tortured and held incommunicado several times during the Estado Novo. He was imprisoned in several prisons in Portugal and for nine years in the Tarrafal concentration camp, created by the Portuguese state in Cape Verde, in 1936. He was fifteen years old the first time he was arrested and fifty- nine the last time, already during the democracy. His testimony gives an insight into many aspects of the life of a member of anti-fascist resistance and the structures and methods of containment used to try to annihilate the opposition. The role played by certain stylistic featuresof the narrative is highlighted in the essay. The value of this trilogy for the constitution of collective memory is discussed. Keywords: José Luis Gallego; Francoism; Prisons; Poetry; Clandestinity; (self-)censorship.

National Socialists deprived of German citizenship thousands of people they thought of as alien to a homogenized Deutschtum, while including many others in a so-called popular-national-racial community. The latter was perceived both as a “scientific” reality and as something to be fostered in different ways. This article analyzes a series of devices used by National Socialism in Argentina to instill within German speakers the feel of a regenerate and harmonic community. It also points out that those messages and actions contributed to reinforce a German identification among the motley group of German speakers residing in the country while also contributing to integrate them into Argentine society as a whole.
