The strategic importance of modern book fairs goes beyond Book Studies, encouraging new perspectives and border crossing analyses. Therefore, and informed by an intensive fieldwork at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara) in 2017, this essay deals with the performative nature of cultural products, speeches, and representations. In so doing, I shall first examine the relationship between literature, heritage, and tourism through the lens of literary journals available at the fair. Then, building bridges between existing lines of research and informed by ongoing debates in the field, I shall highlight the entanglements between politics, publishing industry and marketplace imperatives through the lens of Spanish independent publishers.

What happens when a prestigious publishing house that calls itself “independent”, with a defined public, publishes a “political bestseller” and expands its readers market? Is there opposition between the modes of production of the large groups and that of independent publishers? What tensions arise, taking into account the history of the publishing house, the structure of the company, its catalogue and its agents? This paper asks about the role of the book publisher in the public debate and focuses on one case: the Siglo Veintiuno publishing house in Argentina and one of its most recent collections, Singular, which since 2012 publishes books about the political situation written by authors from the academic, journalistic and political fields. Using interviews with agents of the publishing house, as well as an analysis of its catalogue, we explore the process that a prestigious publishing house goes through in its quest to expand its readership, intervene and compete in the publishing and intellectual fields, under particular economic and political conditions.

The aim of this work is to understand the dynamics between writers and the emerging literary circles of Paraguay at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the place assigned to the Guarani language in this interaction. This article specifically studies the case of Narciso R. Colmán concerning the publication of his first book, Ocara potÿ (Cantares de Rosicrán) [Field flowers. Rosicran’s songs] (1917). It is shown how he was able to introduce his poetic work to the emerging intellectual circles of Asunción and be acknowledged by them. For this purpose, we will first briefly review the author's career and the most relevant critical studies on his work, and then analyze the conditions of production and reception of the two editions of his book.

This article presents a first analysis of the results of the application of the “Encuesta de caracterización de editoriales independientes de Colombia 2019”, designed by the Observatorio Editorial Colombiano (entity attached to the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, Colombia). This survey was completed towards the end of 2020 by 62 of the 95 independent Colombian publishers belonging to the Comité de Editoriales Independientes of the Cámara Colombiana del Libro. In this article we have wanted to direct our gaze towards certain aspects (identity, production, commercialization) that account for the current configuration and operation of a significant sample of Colombian independent publishers, to outline some generalities that, in the light of a bibliographic review on the independent, allow to characterize this segment of the publishing sector of the country.

The general aim of this paper is to describe the material and symbolic changes that take place in the modes of production and circulation of Spanish-language literature when women participate in the editorial teams of independent publishing houses. On the one hand, we make visible the increasingly notable publishing work being carried out by women in Ibero-America, as well as the multiplication of feminist texts, while at the same time, from a gender perspective, questioning the traditional association that has linked women publishers with certain genres such as children’s literature. On the other hand, we propose a reflection on the specific relationship between (materialist) feminism and independent publishing: what does a feminist publishing praxis consist of? We will use some of Delphy, Kergoat and Gago’s categories as a starting point to think about the way in which “disobedient” publishing politics are being developed in Latin America and Spain.

Literature had a prominent role in coping with the migratory process that Antonio Dal Masetto, along with his family, began to face a few years after the end of World War II. Starting from a series of interviews with the author and addressing some passages of his work in an autobiographical key, we try to make visible, on one hand, how the practice of reading helped him face the first stages of the migratory experience and, on the other, how writing allowed him to make a gradual return to his homeland. During this return, the author manages to assume his two-faced identity condition and, in turn, become the constructor and transmitter of his family’s memory.

The objective of this article is to carry out a study of the work Para la libertad. Memorias a un padre asesinado (2017), by Antonio Martínez i Ferrer, while we use it as a platform and trigger for a debate that involves the rest of the memorial stories. Therefore, we start from three axes or questions: authorship (who narrates?), composition and strategy (how it narrates?) and the political direction or ideological sense (to what place?). The analysis intends to problematize some of the central elements that cross the subaltern memories and focus the debate on the recovery strategies of the imprisoned narratives.
