The Área de Paleontología at Fundación Azara works at the Maimónides University. In 17 years it has established itself solidly in publications, colleagues' meetings and in the media. In the facet of exploration, it has contributed to more than 10 new paleoherpetological localities, some as important as the Paleontological Area of La Buitrera, La Bonita, La Escondida, El Pueblito and the field of Violante, all in Río Negro Province, and Bajada Colorada in Neuquén Province. Outside the country, it has contributed to the new ichnological localities of Tunasniyoj and Ruditayoj (Bolivia) and explored the Yamana locality in Ecuador for the first time. In the research stage, nearly 50 new paleoherpetological species and novel visions have been contributed, such as the existence of snakes 70 million years before the oldest known, the relationship between Jurassic sphenodonts of the south of the pangeic desert, successions in the faunas of South American dinosaurs, the presence of spikes and square jaws among titanosaurs and the extinction of carcharodontosaurid theropods and their coincidence with the extinction of rebbachisaurid sauropods. As for the formation of human resources, some 10 doctoral theses and other dissertations have been made based on our own topics, forming a group of researchers today distributed throughout the country. Finally, regarding divulgation, fiction series, informative programs have been carried out and a dozen books have been published, in addition to having started or resumed serial publications on natural science topics.

The paleoherpetological record of the Santa Cruz Province, southern Argentina, has been traditionally scarce when compared to other regions of Patagonia. The record was sporadic from the end of the 19th century and most of the 20th century, increasing towards the end of the latter. Already in the new millennium, specific research lines were established in the province through systematic paleontological fieldtrips mainly focused on dinosaurs. The presence of the Museo Regional “Padre Molina” was a benchmark for the cultural heritage of the province and became the main paleontological repository of Santa Cruz since 1997.

The Geological and Paleontological Museum of the National University of Comahue went through several infrastructure and funding problems. However, the effort made by their members allowed sustaining its activities since its foundation in 1976. The foundation of Proyecto Dino in 2002, on the coast of Los Barreales lake, at 90 km northwest of Neuquén city, signaled a new phase in the history of the Geological and Paleontological Museum, integrating the museum with an incredible area with cretaceous outcrops. Cretaceous fossil reptiles are a fundamental part of the collection of the Geological and Paleontological Museum of the National University of Comahue, which includes 30 holotypes and more than 2,000 paleovertebrates, paleobotanic, and paleoinvertebrates specimens.

This report summarizes some historical landmarks that shaped the development of paleontology in general and paleoherpetology in particular, in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. A chronological order is used to locate the main events that involve the actions of the members of the Compañía de Jesús since the 17th century (creation of the Colegio Mayor, from which the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba emerges in 1613) until the current studies on fossil vertebrates. Undoubtedly, paleontology in Córdoba was characterized by the study of mammals conducted by non-resident researchers in the province. This situation was modified with the recent beginning of a team of non-mammalian vertebrate paleontologists that from the institutions settled within the province, are dedicated to the study of archosaurs.

The first studies on fossil birds in the Museo de La Plata were carried out since the last decade of the 19th century. These were isolated studies, which did not increase their frequency or intensity until the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, an increasing amount and thematic deepening led to the specificity that today characterizes the scientific works around the world. From that moment, the Museo de La Plata was consolidated as a training center for paleontologists who established themselves in other institutions forming new work teams.

Central/North argentinean provinces such as Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Catamarca, Salta, and Jujuy play a very important role in the paleoherpetology history of our country. They were and still are the scene of several geological-paleontological explorations, and the territory where institutions that build up the knowledge of this discipline in South America developed, through their collections, protagonists, and lines of research. This article presents the main facts and protagonists of this history, who left their mark on the different museums, institutes and national universities of these provinces of the Northeast and Northwest of Argentina

The paleoherpetological research at the National University of Cuyo (Mendoza) began in 2012 with the development of theLaboratory and Museum of Dinosaurs, which was created by Bernardo González Riga, receiving the support of the authorities of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences. This “Laboratory and Museum” develop four key aspects that enrich each other: research, university teaching, pro-tection of paleontological heritage and social extension. It is managed and built by a team of researchers, teachers, technicians and students, highlighting the leading role of L. Ortiz David, J. P. Coria, M.B. Tomaselli, C. Mercado and G. Sánchez Tiviroli. For this, a collaborative and sup-portive work is developed, having as a mission to do science and bring it closer to society. The researchers focused on Systematics, Phylogeny, Paleoecology and Taphonomy of dinosaurs and pterosaurs, and ichnological analyses related with anatomical aspects, as well. Among the most significant discoveries carried out before and during the development of the Laboratory and Museum are the first sauropod dinosaurs from Mendoza Province: Mendozasaurus, Malarguesaurus, Quetecsaurus and Notocolossus, the latter being one of the largest dinosaurs discovered in the world. Likewise, in the South of Mendoza other two exceptional discoveries were made: the largest pterosaur recorded in South America and the first dinosaur footprints quarry of Mendoza, which has ca. 400 ichnites. This ichnological quarry has been studied and protected for 14 years, following the aim to become this discovery in a natural park known today Cretaceous Park of Dinosaur Footprints of Malargüe. In Mendoza, the formation of the first team specialized in dinosaurs contributes to Argentine paleoherpetology.

The San Juan Museum of Natural Sciences was created in 1964 by provincial law. This law was a reaction to the fossil’s drainage since the scientific discovery of Ischigualasto in 1958, because there was no authorized repository in San Juan. Once the law was passed, the Museum only existed on paper for several years until a group of enthusiastic academics and some collectors donated their geological, paleontological, and biological specimens to the provincial government. Later, the Tourism Board moved forward and donated the first floor of its building to the new Museum. In this contribution, the entire historical journey of the San Juan Museum of Natural Sciences is recounted since its humble creation: its incorporation to the National University of San Juan, the first collections, the first “Sanjuaninean” vertebrate paleontologist by adoption, the “gringo” William Sill, the incorporation of researchers, the rediscovery of Ischigualasto, the work with the Earthwatch Foundation, the discovery of new sites, the exhibitions that traveled the world, and finally, a deserved home of its own. This historical account has been described as a human feat, because an institution is the people who made it and those who support it every day. These people gave their best, and made a passionate and sacrificed effort to achieve everything that the Museum of Natural Sciences is today and what it represents for San Juan.

The extinct herpetofauna of the Chubut Province is one of the most diverse, temporally and spatially extensive, and well-known extinct faunas in Argentina and South America. These fossils help understanding the evolution of the herpetofauna in the Patagonian region during more than 180 million years. Since its establishment in 1990, the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio plays a key role in the discovery, protection, study, and display of the important fossils of the Province. The paleoherpetological study at MPEF has passed through three different stages: the Initial, the Intermediate, and the Current stages. At present, the paleoherpetological collection contains approximately 960 specimens of anurans and reptiles—including turtles lepidosaurs, plesiosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs, and birds—found in sedimentary formations that span from the Early Jurassic to the late Miocene. Based on this material, at least 30 new species have been named, and more than 200 studies have been published in less than three decades.

When somebody thinks about the history and trajectory of the vertebrate paleontology in Argentina, the images of Florentino Ameghino and many other world-renowned paleontologists come to mind. In this work, the stories of those technicians who were working side by sideand supporting these great paleontologists are presented, since the time of Carlos Ameghino (F. Ameghino’s brother) to the new generations, who approached the different institutions to be trained and work in this noble profession.
