T This paper analyzes how, in the eminently professional institutional setting of the university at the beginning of the s. XX, the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas presents the conditions for experimental research; the underlying research system that makes possible the experimental program of Alfredo Palacios is described, as well as the role of the Seminar, a specific section of the investigation, which was actually part of the investigation group. Methodologically, primary and secondary sources were used, mainly the empirical support of little used sources from the Treasury of the Facultad library and the archives of the Museum of Experimental Psychology in Argentina. For the characterization and explanation of the experimental research, we resorted mainly to the empirical support of little-used sources from the Treasure of the Facultad library and the archives of the Museum of Experimental Psychology in Argentina. The paper shows that Palacios' experimental investigations were not limited to a typical investigation of his time, the individual attempt, but that it was possible by virtue of a novel model of investigation that emerged as one of the main purposes of the creation of the Facultad in 1913.

The present writing gives an overview of electricity and magnetism at the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century, a context in which there is the invention of the battery by Alessandro Volta, and the development of the experience of the needle by Hans Christian Ørsted, both fundamental facts in the channeling of experimental practices and in the constitution of the theoretical bodies of the sciences. In this way, the two texts written by the danish scientist in the year 1820 (one translated from Latin to English), which were published by the journal Annals of Philosophy, are presented. They first detail the experience that took place and some of the ideas that Oersted established to give meaning to the observed phenomenon. Subsequently, new experiments are established within the framework of what he assumed as electromagnetism.

In this article we consider the significance of formal equivalence in the language proposed by Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts in their original “A logical calculus of the ideas immanent in nervous activity”.  We study the model from the contributions that it has meant in the history of science: as a computational theory of mind; and as a formalism that contributed to the development of automata theory and logical design. This question is framed into the mechanistic explanation account and the philosophy of scientific models, while also attending to how the model embedded a conception of a language as a logical calculus. We consider the relationship between the model and its target system, offering two possible interpretations: logical neurons are the model that represents the mind-brain or it is a new conceptual object that enables the development of artificial automata. We observe how the formal equivalence notion plays a fundamental role: as scientific explanation about mind’s theory, as an isomorphism criterion of mind’s model, and as identity criterion of logic neurons or formal neurons.

In this article, we present a description of the philosophy of elementary particles developed by Werner Heisenberg. In addition to describing his theses on the nature of the so-called elementary particles, we will also try to understand the German physicist's motives for sending to Heidegger's 70th birthday Festschrift a complicated text from the scientific point of view and with no direct relationship to the philosophy of the author of Sein und Zeit. Our hypothesis is that Heisenberg intended to perform a double movement. While positioning himself in favour of closer relations between science and philosophy, Heisenberg refused to accept some of Heidegger's negative positions in relation to science, which, according to the latter, was already dominated by the Gestell.

It has recently been argued that mathematics can play a genuinely explanatory role in science. Cases where this is supposed to be the case have been divided into those where the explanatory role is played by mathematical operations, and those where it is played by mathematical entities. In this article, I analyze some of these purported cases and argue that claims that mathematics can be genuinely explanatory are unfounded. Throughout my discussion, I emphasize the representational role of mathematics, as opposed to its supposed explanatory role: the role of mathematics, even in the cases that I discuss, is to represent physical facts and help draw inferences about those facts.

 The article analyzes the academic production published between the years 2010 and 2019in the main Brazilian scientific journals focused on the field of International Relations, cutbased on their Qualis/Capes rating. It was employed the method of quantitative contentanalysis to 720 articles, published in the following journals: Revista Brasileira de PolíticaInternacional (Qualis A1), Contexto Internacional (Qualis A2) and Carta Internacional(Qualis B1). The results reveal the plurality of research themes and authors’ networks,besides reinforcing the methodological shortcomings that the field presents.   Keywords: Research in International Relations; Academic Production; Content Analysis.

This article investigates the role of the participation of the Brazilian Business Coalition(CEB) in the negotiations between Mercosur and the European Union. This participationis analyzed through the study of the interaction between CEB and different Braziliangovernmental actors. The article tests the hypothesis that this participation was conditionedon the technical capacity of the Coalition. To test this hypothesis, content, and documentanalysis methods, process tracing, and interviews were used. In the conclusions of thearticle, it was possible to confirm that CEB’s participation in trade negotiations is basedon its technical contributions.

The “Luanda Leaks” disclosure exposed the business network that supported the Angolanelite’s fortune. This article analyzes the agent role assumed by Global South elites in thepublic and private domains. To do so, it would be based on the methodology of Kleemansand Van de Bunt’s (1999) social networks analysis, highlighting the interconnectionsbetween the Angolan elite actors based on Isabel dos Santos. The conclusions in this articleconfirm the elites’ role as builders of a transnational articulation that formed the financialempire of which Isabel dos Santos was part of.
