The word “Renaissance” designates a historical period only since the 19th Century; but it’s in the 14th Century, especially after Petrarch, when the idea of a Latin rebirth should be dated through removing it from the asperitas of Scholastic and restoring the studia humanitatis by a return to the Ancients. And even if nowadays we tend to forget it, humanism played a crucial role in the historical developpement of the notion of Europe. The humanist dream of regenerating culture and civilization gave way to a feeling of unity that was not only religious, also cultural. This article is a “panoramic journey” to the origins of both a moral and a political Europe that slowly took conscience of itself in Alterity. The analysis, at the same time literary, political and historical, flows through four main channels and reconstitutes “the birth of the idea of Europe,” from the taking of Constantinople to the great discoveries.

This article attempts to analyze the relationship between religious legacies of receiving countries of immigration and the politics of integration, or multiculturalism. It aims to discuss the issues of continuity and change, of convergence and divergences in these policy areas in light of arguments of cultural path-dependency as they are used, for example, in secularization theory. At a conceptual level, the author will examine the relationship between religion and democracy, with regard to 19 Western democracies, a group of countries characterized by a certain size, high levels of socio-economic development, stable democratic systems and a (Latin) Christian religious legacy. The general point in this article is that national legacies are still an important constraint for real convergence of policies across countries, despite the pluralization of the international order after 1989, despite globalization, EU-integration and also 9/111

If there is one inherent characteristic to novel during the period of time elapsed between the two World Wars it would be its tendency to de- construct both men’s representations and his surroundings in order to postpone Western decline and save creation. This existential and spiri- tual crisis, inherent to a pursuit of “sense,” leads to a deep change in the literary views Europe has on the world and on itself. Starting from the postulate that a “European literary model” is recognized through a group of signs typical of a civilization crash, the author analyzes a generation of writers disillusioned about their time who are sketching a critical production from where emerge some of the most important texts in the European literature. This article proposes an evaluation of the fundamental questions that are defining poetics of the European culture during the period elapsed between the two world wars through four point argument.
