The Bologna process aims to create the European Higher Education Area, which has been joined not only by European countries but also by countries from other continents. It is a complex process that should culminate in 2010 with the creation of a new international educational framework. It is a truly transcendental change compared to previous reforms. It will possibly define a before and after for many disciplines in many countries. Certainly in ours, in Spain, and in our discipline, design, this will undoubtedly be the case.

First lithographic printing presses in Malaga appeared around 1825. Although at the beginning the means used for publications were rather rudimentary, as images became more important, they were perfected and modernised. From 1880 onwards, the use of rotary presses began to become generalised, and many workshops saw the need to catch up in order to satisfy a public that demanded an ever-increasing quantity of printed advertising material to publicise their products. In Malaga there was an interesting lithographic production from the 1830s, centred on wallpaper, reproductions of religious and commemorative prints, playing cards and fan decorations. The city exported large quantities of all these products. But it was the growing need for printed paper for companies (advertising posters, labels, office paper, etc.) that really determined the extraordinary development of lithographic and printing activity in our city.

Our environment is moving at an accelerated pace, dragging us towards a path where it seems impossible to find a moment to rest, where it doesn't even seem possible to breathe and yet constant changes are constantly occurring that are shaping our future without being able to do anything to avoid it, or maybe we can? In this article I am going to present my doctoral thesis project whose object is based on the understanding of the constant evolution of the market, focusing on the concept of lifestyles, this being an important focus of innovation, where design plays a fundamental role in translating the continuous needs of users into successful products/services for organisations.

We are inexorably subjected to the influence of the image! Put in this way, perhaps this phrase may seem a little exaggerated, but it is also true that we are currently immersed in a society where the image incites and excites us from a prominent and privileged position. Images, shapes and colours are actively integrated into our urban environment. Sometimes they emerge spontaneously but, in general, the image tends to respond to a specific slogan expressed in a singular way, that is to say, they are a constituent part of a delimited code that emits specific and interested messages. In fact, the control of the image is an efficient way of showing the "product", and it is produced through a type of language such as advertising or artistic language.

In the context of the Icograda Design Week in Madrid, held from 21 to 25 June 2010, the exhibition EVERYTHING IS DESIGN was inaugurated in this same city -specifically in the Salón de Columnas of the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Circle). Curated by Oscar Mariné, it showed a selection of over five hundred works by Spanish designers (forty professionals from Spain) and from other European countries (a total of twenty professionals in this case). It has sought to make visible how communication design contributes value to companies -especially in increasing brand value and competitiveness- and contributes to cultural diversity and the quality of life of all citizens.

Why is Botta's work so important? Because he understood before others that the time had come "to take a new path within the complexity of post-industrial society". In the words of Carlo Bertelli, his architecture is characterised by the poetics of listening, of places and people. An inexhaustible willingness to listen to the territory and those who inhabit it. A listening that goes beyond the self-referential fact —the house or the church à la Botta— to take in and make its own the stimuli, the suggestions, the paths that seek to give substance and concreteness to the design intuition.

The objective of any type of corporation, once its identity has been clearly defined and its products/services are in line with it, is to achieve that positive image that places it in a preferential position with the public. This projection of the identity towards the corporate image is manifested to a large extent through the signs or visual aspects it comprises, together, of course, with the immaterial aspects that are growing every day in strategic considerations.

It is clear that the future is sustainable design, but there is a great deal of confusion about it and a lack of resources in Spanish. The blog DiseñoySostenibilidad.com was created to promote Spanish-Latin American sustainable design.

This article takes a brief look at the relationship that art and advertising have maintained since their beginnings. It pays greater attention to the link that the artistic avant-gardes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries maintained with the world of advertising, especially with the poster. Advertising and art, art and advertising, a possible binomial? A possible binomial?
