THE SIERRA CORRAL DE LOS BANDIDOS IS A NATURAL PROTECTED AREA LOCATED IN THE SIERRA MADRE ORIENTAL MOUNTAIN RANGE NORTHWEST OF MONTERREY CITY. THIS PRESERVE SUFFERS THE IMPACT OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES IN THE FORM OF CATTLE RANCHING, AGRICULTURE, HARVEST OF WILD PLANTS, AND URBANISM), DIMINISHING ITS NATURAL RESOURCES AND THREATENING ITS ENDEMIC SPECIES, ESPECIALLY FROM THE CACTACEAE FAMILY. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE DIVERSITY OF CACTI AND ASSOCIATED SPECIES IN THE BUFFER AND NUCLEUS ZONES OF THE PRESERVE. STRATI! ED SAMPLING WITH QUADRATS ALONG TRANSECTS ORIENTED ALONG ELEVATIONAL GRADIENTS WERE CARRIED OUT TO ESTIMATE RICHNESS AND SIMILARITY INDICES. A TOTAL OF 112 TAXA (30 CACTACEAE) WERE FOUND: 87 (24 CACTACEAE) IN THE BUFFER ZONE AND 80 (19 CACTACEAE) IN THE NUCLEUS ZONE. THE MOST CONSPICUOUS CACTUS SPECIES DUE TO THEIR DENSITY, FREQUENCY, AND ABUNDANCE WERE ECHINOCEREUS STRAMINEUS (ENGELM.) ENGELM. EX F. SEITZ, CYLINDROPUNTIA LEPTOCAULIS F. M. KNUTH IN BACKEB ET F. M. KNUTH, MAMMILLARIA MELANOCENTRA POSELG., NEOLLOYDIA CONOIDEA (DC) BRITTON ET ROSE, (CACTACEAE); ERIONEURON AVENACEUM (H. B ET K.) TATEOKA, (POACEAE); VIGUIERA STENOLOBA S. F. BLAKE; ZEXMENIA HISPIDA (KUNTH) A. GRAY, (ASTERACEAE) AND AGAVE LECHUGUILLA TORR, (AGAVACEAE). SIGNI! CATIVE DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE CACTACEAE PLANTS FOR THE ZONES OF THE PROTECTED AREA, AS SHOWN BY THE INDICES OBTAINED: JACQUARD (13%), SÖRENSEN (38%) AND MORISITA (0.44). EIGHT CACTUS SPECIES (7 ENDEMIC) FROM THIS REPORT ARE LISTED AS RECEIVING SOME LEVEL OF PROTECTION UNDER MEXICAN CONSERVATION LAW.

The high thermal sensitivity of the cancerogenic cells has lead to use hyperthermia to sensitive and eradicate them with efficiency and effectiveness. The traditional procedure for malignant bone tumors is mainly amputation, affecting the life quality of children and adolescents. Hydro hyperthermia has been chosen to improve the prognoses in the extirpation and eradication of the malignant tumors in the Departamento de Tumores Óseos at Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación. In this paper, it is showing the design, manufacture and operation of a system to generate, control and deliver heat energy into tumor: “Controlled Hydro Hyperthermia”. As well as, Bone Temperature Distribution. The system is a cheap, easy, affordable and secure system that represents a chance to preserve the extremity without to use any surgical appliance. The system has three parts: The first is the electromechanical device that provides temperature above 80 °C, last 30 min minimum. Second, the direct steam applicator. And finally the thermal mapping. At the moment, 19 patients, with bone tumor and pseudotumor in extremities, have been submitted to hydro hyperthermia procedure. 85.7% patients with osteosarcoma have had good prognostic and the hydro hyperthermia system has not any problem.

Avians manipulation for cardio-respiratory rhythm recording is complicated because of the stress induced since the animal is captured until it is immobilized to attach the measurement instruments to him, and this process could be finalized in death. The development of instruments to register remote physiology signals is important for animal care and research applications. It is described the development and application of a pulse oximetry based electronic system to record the cardio-respiratory rhythm in small avians by using transcutaneous infrared light sensor taking advantage of the animal behavior and the cage arrangement to make the avian stand over the sensor spontaneously avoiding the behave and conduct disturb for added stimulus. A light and noise isolated area was designated to improve the pulse oximetry technical disadvantages and to diminish avian disturbing, getting quality records according to the daylight routine activity while the avian placement varies if the feet or stomach are next to or over the photoelectric devices. Results according to the avian placement respective to the photoelectric devices show three different signal patterns: heart rate, respiratory rhythm and the heart rate modulated by the respiratory rhythm. It is important to take into account as is considered in electroencephalographic tests the constant vigilance during the recording to set tags for the movement artifacts like smarten up and during the birdsong.

A Rule-Based Control (RBC) for “normal” walking off a Transfemoral Prosthesis (TFP) was developed for its implementation in a microcontroller. The advantages of using this type of control over analytical methods are described, as well as the results obtained in the Gait Cycle Analysis, the rule generation, the programming structure and the most relevant conclusions obtained in work realized in [1,2] at the Control Department of Aalborg University (Denmark) in collaboration with the Center for Sensory Motor Interaction (SMI) of such University.

The development of ambulatory electrocardiography systems in a telemedicine scheme is an increasing necessity, especially for arrhythmia detection and monitoring. This paper describes the development of a telemonitoring scheme based on GSM/GPRS data transmission technology that emphasizes in the record and transmission of cardiac events. In this scheme the patient wears a small monitoring device which acquires the electrocardiographic signal (ECG), processes the signal using algorithms for the calculation of heart rate and detection of serious arrhythmias by means of phase space reconstruction; stores the events in a removable flash memory; and transmit the signals if a signal abnormality detection occur. The information is sent to a Specialized Center of Cardiovascular Monitoring, where it can be evaluated by a physician, who can make a diagnosis without requiring patient displacement. The different components of the system have been validated through different tests confirming their functionality.

This paper describes the design and implementation of an external demand pacemaker. Signal conditioning electronic circuits were designed in order to obtain the quantization of cardiac electrogram signals, myocardium stimulation circuits were also designed. Ventricular activity was detected by implementing a QRS complex detector based on Haar wavelet. Detection and pacemaker control algorithms were programmed on the digital signal controller dsPIC30F4013. The developed prototype has been tested on laboratory, using records from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and on guinea pigs in order to verify its correct operation.
