A rehabilitation tool based on an innovative mimetic active orthosis for hemiplegics is presented. It follows concepts of neuronal learning from afferent information from movements, similar to those lost after brain damage. An artificial gait pattern is applied on knee and hip articulations of a functionally modified limb by using an exoskeleton powered by pneumatic muscles.

The origin and evolution of business initiatives is a recurring theme in reflections on development. In Latin America this discussion has had, in the last fifteen years, a strong link with the debates dedicated to local development, especially regarding the configuration of new forms of productive organization (Barros 2007, Dini et al. 2005, Iglesias y Rocha 2006, Kantis et al. 2002; to mention some recent contributions).

The authors have provided consultation for a process of awareness-raising and construction of an inter-institutional territorial alliance at the micro-regional level, involving various municipalities in the southern part of Argentina’s province of Entre Ríos. The key players in this process of strategic alliances between public and private sectors are the municipalities of Larroque, Urdinarrain, Aldea San Antonio and Gilbert, their local development agencies, chambers of commerce, cooperatives, training centers and the most representative institutions from local communities. Efforts to reconcile and create common interests led to the forming of what is referred to as the Southern Entre Ríos Micro-region. This article reflects upon the strategy used in the process of creating and internationalizing the micro-region, and the significant experiences in associativism, training and investment that were achieved in this territory.

This article is focused on analyzing the roles played by the business sphere and entrepreneurship in local development processes. The first of the article’s three sections proposes the reasons for which the economic sphere is considered to be one of the main focuses of local development, with emphasis on the role of micro and small-sized businesses as well as local productive systems in socio-territorial relationships that promote a territory’s development. In the second section, the author defines entrepreneurship, and explains why promoting entrepreneurship is a task that is correlated with local development practice. The third section analyzes the case of Jalisco’s furniture industry, as an example in which entrepreneurship is promoted, with emphasis on increasing competitiveness and the survival of a traditional economic sector.

This article discusses whether Baja California, a northern border Mexican state, has an endogenous local development dynamic, or its achievements in economic growth rest on a weak economic base with a high level of exogenous dependency. This article describes the findings of a study on the creation and functioning of alliances aimed at promoting innovation and developed among agricultural producers, the government and a series of actors. Sixteen innovation alliances in Bolivia’s rural sector were evaluated, with the aim of better understanding: a) the context in which they are created, b) how they function in relation to innovation, c) how the collaborative process works, and d) the evolution of these alliances over time. The results demonstrate that there are enough experiences in establishing alliances to be able to identify factors that promote innovation through them, such as, supporting greater understanding among members as to their purpose, working towards ongoing development of alliances, improving interaction among its members, and assuring their respective contributions.

The author reviews the way in which hegemonic economic thought produced in academic centers in developed countries considers the participation and inclusion of Latin American markets in the globalized economy. From a perspective of critical thought, the author reviews the economic procedures followed by the global market in the process of incorporating Latin American countries, and the consequences from the indiscriminate opening of their national economies to international capital. In addition, the article questions the possibilities for world development as proposed by modern capitalism on the basis of the union between technology and communications with the unequal and inequitable functioning of the global economy
