Salmon poisoning disease (SPD) is caused by a rickettsial organism, Neorickettsia helminthoeca, that is carried by the trematode Nanophyetus salmincola, which encysts in freshwater fish, most commonly salmonids. We reported two dogs from the United States West Coast that had similar clinical signs, hematologic and biochemistry findings. They were both diagnosed with salmon poisoning disease. Lymph node cytology showed morula formation, suggestive of N. helminthoeca organisms in macrophages, while the parasitological fecal test found ova of N. salmincola. The dogs were treated early and showed complete remission of clinical signs within a few days. Lymph node cytology and fecal parasitology are quick and low-cost tests that can be performed whenever SPD is suspected. SPD should be considered as a differential diagnosis for a canine patient with clinical signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and lymphadenomegaly; laboratory findings of thrombocytopenia and hypoalbuminemia; and potential exposure to raw fish from the West Coast of the US or Southern Brazil. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the greater the chance of survival

This study aimed to evaluate the use of equine amniotic membrane (EAM), frozen indirectly using liquid nitrogen and stored between −10° and −24°C, in the treatment of equine skin lesions. Six healthy female horses, aged 3–10 years, were included in this study. EAM was collected from previously evaluated healthy parturient mares. Wounds were surgically created at the distal ends of the forelimbs. One limb was chosen for treatment, and the contralateral limb was chosen as the control. Pain sensitivity, presence of granulation tissue, secretions, and bleeding after debridement during cleaning were evaluated. Microscopically, the following were evaluated: the integrity of the epithelium, the organization of the connective tissue, the presence of hemorrhage, fibroplasia, epithelial hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, neovascularization, and the types of cells present. Assessments were performed on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 63, and the time to complete the lesion closure. Treatment with EAM promoted faster recovery, greater neovascularization, better quality fibroplasia, and less sensitivity to pain than the control group. We concluded that the use of EAM was advantageous compared to the control group.

This article describes comparatively the discourses on cis male homosexualities in Brazil and Colombia. We start from both the Foucauldian discussion about the sexuality apparatus and the biopolitics production of exception, and the genealogy of homosexualities in the two countries. Our corpus is delimited by two temporal circumscriptions and consists of the following: in the eighties of the 20th, the newspapers Ventana Gay, from Colombia, and Lampião da Esquina, from Brazil; in the 21st century, the online discourses of Põe na Roda (2014), in Brazil, and Juan Pablo Jaramillo, in Colombia. Analytically, we can notice i) a non-irrelevant displacement of the discursive strategies that surround the more effeminate, passive, and vulnerable homosexualities; ii) the ambiguous and constant presence of an internationalizing and egalitarian gay discourse; and iii) a tense game between resistance practices and the normalization of the good gay. We conclude that we are facing a polyvalent and moralizing discourse that bears conditions of production in the current liberal-moral governmental topology in Brazil and Colombia.

This paper analyses the short story "Desastres íntimos" by the Uruguayan writer Cristina Peri Rossi from both a decolonial feminist perspective and the conception of the body. The analysis is structured from three fundamental perspectives. Firstly, the notion of patriarchy and the masculine world in which the protagonist is involved: her relationships with Antonio, her son Andrés, her boss and her psychoanalyst. Secondly, the relationship that the protagonist establishes with her maternal role and the contradiction in which she lives her motherhood and professional development, challenging the pseudo-feminist idea of the super mother. Finally, the relationship she establishes with her own body and sexuality, understanding that this is a political space of domination and struggle for her own rights. The main findings show that the protagonist lives an explicit patriarchal oppression experienced through the male characters and especially through her role as mother/professional, which is overturned at the end of the story.

This essay entertains the hypothesis that a correlation between narrative identity and feminine identity may exist, and it provides an investigation of dynamic and hybrid nature. To achieve its purpose, the protagonist of the epistolary text Lady Susan by Jane Austen was the sample examined. According to the records available, this narrative was created throughout the years of 1793 and 1795, during a transition period of the author, from the Juvenilia works to her mature ones. Firstly, a basal search was done to briefly explore the possible definitions for the terms Identity and Gender Identity by authors such as John Locke and Michel Foucault amongst others. Secondly, they were contrasted with the concept of narrative identity created by Paul Ricoeur (2006). The application of this philosophic approach in a metalinguistic analysis in the opus enabled us to achieve a feminine narrative identity for Lady Susan. For this exploration, the corpus was divided into groups of perspectives in confrontation, to later search for textual samples, narrative combinations, itinerating characteristics, and viable themes this character may rise in distinct concepts of identity. The results revealed a particular feminine narrative identity, inserted in relevant themes, with considerable complainant potential.

The present cross-sectional study centres on interlanguage pragmatics and seeks to determine the manner in which a group of thirteen Chilean Spanish speaking teachers of English express remorse in English, in comparison with a group of thirteen native speakers of the English language. This comparison pursues to ascertain differences and/ or similarities in terms of linguistic expressions used, grammatical structures, and cultural authenticity. The data was gathered by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) containing fifteen situational prompts that elicit expressions of remorse by both groups of speakers. To establish whether cultural authenticity varies, i.e., if participants would utilise similar responses in similar everyday situations, a three-question questionnaire was attached to some of the situations. The findings show that both groups express remorse quite similarly in terms of linguistic utterances and grammatical structures but vary greatly when it comes to cultural authenticity; many of the speakers of the first group did not use swearing words or expressions in English, but said they would have in a similar and real situation. This study may contribute to a better understanding of how remorse is uttered and one of its results is a coding scheme for the most utilised realisations of remorse.

Given the multiple challenges and conflicts that have involved Brazilian Elementary Education, reading and interpreting literary texts become a complex task, especially when teachers introduce this exercise in the class of English. Thus, I consider it pertinent to discuss some issues that maintain or reinforce the difficulties in teaching literature at school since some originate from its conception in this space where literary studies, when it happens, tend to be centered in the canon, a conditioning variable in the process of meaning-making. Therefore, this article aims to rethink how we commonly teach and use literature texts, and possible ways to break with canonized literary practices. To throw light to my arguments, I frame them in studies by Bourdieu (2008) and Sousa Santos (2009), among other scholars who, approaching or not literary education, offer several opportunities to help us reflect on this issue. As a result, the rupture with canonical literary practices gives agency to the reader and the perception that literature is a space for exchange, resignification, and transformation of identities and narratives; therefore, there are no ready-made answers.

This article identifies the main features of the oral code that interfere with university academic writing. The study focuses on students entering the first year at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Quito campus. Through a theoretical distinction between features of the oral and written code, the research analyzes 106 brief textual samples written by students. Operationally, the analysis is divided into three parts. First, the 106 samples are classified into three rating ranges: competent (a), regular (b), and insufficient (c). Second, inaccuracies related to five textual properties are selected in the samples: adequacy, coherence, syntactic cohesion, lexical cohesion and grammatical correctness. Third, inaccuracies related to adequacy and consistency are discussed in detail. The analysis of textual adequacy reveals that the interference of the oral code gives rise to inaccuracies such as the use of an informal tone and the implication of the interlocutor. The analysis of textual coherence, on the other hand, may explain how some vices of language construction, especially ambiguity and antinomy, affect the communicative efficacy of an academic text.
