The creation of Environment Conservation Units has unleashed processes of change in the localities. Due to the regulations imposed by the legislation the populations are impelled to modify their ways of appropriation of natural resources. The conservation of these areas matches an urban population demand for a greater contact with places considered as ‘natural’, which encourages a flux of tourists towards them. The inhabitants, restricted to their usual practices and activities and also impelled by the economic pressure of tourism, turn to the rendering of services to these visitors. Thus, the rural area begins to be apprehended as environmental space and seen as "paradise", originating new social territories. In the case of Vila do Aventureiro, in Ilha Grande, these processes occur due to the establishment of two conservation units: the Reserva Biológica da Praia do Sul and the Parque Estadual Marinho do Aventureiro. The proposition of this work is to reflect on the contrast between the preserving perspective installed in this area and the social transformations that this process unleashes.

This paper demonstrates a brand new methodology that is able to solve data comparison problems in census sectors among different population researches. Thus, it aims to show method procedures used in establishing this new urban planning unit named census sector clusters (CSCs). It also aims to apply this method in a study through a basic water ser-vice and sewage disposal indicator (housing permanently connected to general public water services), calculated from some variables of the 1980, 1991 and 2000 census. The answers to this test have demonstrated that it is possible to get a space representation through this new urban planning unit data from different population census that took place after 1980. It is also expected that geo-referenced data and/or studies from other institutions are used under the methodology herein presented and as a consequence the integration and development of some other kind of spatial and temporal analyses be possible. Finally, the obtained results indicate that the present methodology might be consolidated as one of the most important tools in territory planning and management.

Although Community of Practice (CoP) is not a novel subject, it has recently demanded special attention from organizations, which have been encouraging its creation and development aiming organizational knowledge. In this context, this contribution assesses the history of a CoP located at a federal bank, focusing on the Information Security subject. Considering that this research shares the knowledge of learning in a social perspective that refers to phenomena such as interaction, exchange of experiences and dialogue, empirical evidences of the CoP’s work were obtained by means of its members' history narrative. A thematic interview was performed to collect data. Since a conflicting circumstance was observed in the examined CoP's history, it is suggested that the company should support its dispersion. The present case study evokes questions that should be addressed in a more detailed manner concerning the study of other communities.

This paper presents a survey of studies that emphasize the effects related to financing decisions on the firms’ competitive ability. It describes the results of theoretical patterns and an empirical research published during the last two decades and also emphasizes the agenda determined by traditional studies on this subject. Such studies stresses specially the as-pects related to the limited liability of the firms’ owners, the aspects related to the utilization of the capital structure to stimulate predatory competition and also the incentives to establish agreements keeping limits to the competition, con-sidering the choices related to the capital structure of the firm. Considering that the stylized facts suggest a connection between capital structure and competitive strategies, it becomes an important aspect for finance and industrial organiza-tion studies. Besides, the results of theses studies have empirical implications that can give form to public policies regu-lating competition and stimulating the use of debt as a main financing source.

Applied to institucional evaluation strategic knowledge management, the buliding of a system that allows weight the performance of the complexity processes that Distance Distance Education. The systems modeling to be developed is based on the demands of the public organizations envolved and the survey of requirements made with the multidisciplinary groups working with Distance Education at the Federal Institutions of Higher Education. The identification of the information needs of the stakeholders will allows the proposal of a evaluation tool integrated and widespread, able to result in a trustful and eficient information.
