Resumen
Una cita: “el fotógrafo hace la calle” y un conjunto de fotografías de prostitutas del barrio chino de Barcelona constituyen el punto de partida de un ensayo que se interroga por la relación entre fotógrafo y su objeto, por el sentido de la mirada, (de la lectura, de la crítica), hasta llegar a pensar la fotografía como escritura, pero también como jeroglífico, mientras se relee y reescribe la teoría de la abyección de Julia Kristeva, se mantiene un diálogo con clásicos de la teoría de la imagen como La cámara lúcida de Roland Barthes, o se lanzan preguntas sobre los múltiples recorridos del deseo.

Resumen
A partir de la instalación Dados, de Marcel Duchamp, este artículo examina el estatuto del arte y del artista contemporáneo. La propuesta de Duchamp, de pensar “un vacío de lo real” y el subtítulo de su obra (Ovaire toute la nuit) dan pie a una reflexión sobre la noción de origen, que se cruza con la pintura de Tarsila do Amaral, O ovo y las esculturas Iara y L´impossible, de Maria Martins, para mostrar cómo el sentido ya no depende de una forma estable sino de un molde o vaciado que no es ni simbólico ni icónico. En la misma línea, la escritura de Clarice Lispector –con su reflexión sobre el huevo y la gallina– se presenta también como una refutación del realismo.

Resumen
The study analyses the process of gathering bureaucratic information requested by the Spanish Crown from its American possessions during the last decades of the eighteenth century. The Spanish Monarchy required information on a number of topics induding: customs, production, population, incomes, and parishes. This study scrutinizes the specific manner in which the royal order was complied with in the Andean region. The research focuses on the social, political, and cultural conditions that mediated the process of information gathering. The essay underlines the difference between the enlightened reformíst premises that guided the aims of the Spanish Monarchy on the one hand, and the various reactions from the colonial bureaucracy and local Andean societies, on the other hand.

Resumen
The essay analyses legal and social changes that women experienced during the years prior to the Liberal Revolution of 1895. A majority of the pioneering women in Ecuadorian public life carne from the middle and upper classes. The study focuses on the cases of María Luisa Gómez de la Torre, teacher and sole woman participant in the foundation of the Socialist party of Ecuador; and Matilde Hidaldo de Prócel, the first licensed woman doctor, first to vote as a woman, and the first congresswoman elected in Ecuador. The article investiga tes whether these institutional changes were a result bestowed from above, or a social struggle fought from below.

Resumen
The article documents the antecedents and the creation of the Forestry Department of Ecuador; the fírst State agency dedicated to forest protection and environmental control. The study analyses the influence of the fírst director of this institution: Misael Acosta Solís, a geo-botanist born in Ambato and reputed researcher in forestry and conversation issues for Ecuador. The research explores the concepts of conservationism that were assumed by the State and other Ecuadorían institutions, as well as the tensions between envíronmental discourse and practice.

Resumen
The essay examines the legal actions undertaken by a nun in Cuenca at the beginning of the eighteenth century, who sought to retum to a secular life and to renounce her vows. This case study allows us to explore the baroque mentality, the cultural construction of the body, and the agency of women. Working from available evídence from the trial, the article suggests that Martina Catalina of Barza1l0 vindicated a retum to a secular life and the rejection of monastic coercive practices.

This article analyses the Franciscan project for the evangelization of the indigenous elites of Quito during the early colonial periodo The San Andrés school, founded by the Franciscan order in 1553, was a cornerstone of this project. The research analyses the strategíes employed by the Franciscans to incorporate natives into the Hispanic ídeology and culture, by way of creating intercultural mechanisms that connected two worlds.
