Auctoritas, understood as prestige among peers, is a form of social recognition that should not be confused with notoriety or public visibility. I intend to show that auctoritas thus defined is a relational benefit that arises in the sphere of private sociability. Through an analysis of the correspondence of the writer Carlos Pujol (Barcelona, 1936-2012) with fellow writers Ramón Carnicer, Vintilǎ Horia, José Luís Olaizola and Manuel Longares, I also hope to show what motivates auctoritas and the ways in which it is granted to Pujol by his peers.

Two positions have been traditionally defended regarding the constituent order in a transitive clause in Spanish: for some authors Spanish is an SVO language, and for others, given its higher productivity, it is VO. It is my contention that, far from being arbitrary, the distribution between the two alternating structures can be seen to be mutually complementary. The aim of this paper is to show that both types of clauses are, in fact, motivated by the notions of topic and human reference, and that their different productivity is determined by grammatical rules directly related to the discursive structure of the text. Thus, in the case of an (S)VO order, a SVO clause involves a referent of S activated as a topic, as a result of which the following VO clause or clauses imply that their covert subject is already activated and, accordingly, Spanish grammar doesn’t require its phonetic realization. There cannot be a VO clause if its covert subject has not been previously activated.

In this article I explore similarities between Francisco de Luque Fajardo’s Fiel desengaño contra la ociosidad y los juegos (1603) and Cervantes’ El celoso extremeño, some of which were pointed to by Martín de Riquer in 1955. Luque’s text, El celoso extremeño and La ilustre fregona (1613) rework to some extent the biblical parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), a sort of biblical micro-story that seems to have been used as a constructive element and a moral reference by both authors.

This article compares the narrative art of Gilberto Owen and Valeria Luiselli as practised in Novela como nube and Los ingrávidos. Its ultimate aim is to highlight Luiselli’s perceptive reading of Novela como nube as reflected in the novel written by her on the occasion of Owen’s centenary. It takes into account the different contexts in which the two novels were written and attempts to identify certain aspects of Owen’s narrative art that could indicate his possible influence in the genesis and development of Los ingrávidos. It also attempts to offer a new approach to Novela como nube, a work which suggests that Owen saw theater as a way to integrate the new dominant artistic languages (poetry and cinema) into the realm of narrative.
