This text describes the different steps that were given towards the consecution of a  postgraduate course that integrates face-to-face chapters and telematic ones. The course emerges in the context of a specific demand (the professional expectations in Latin America and Spain about the access to a title when face-to-face learning is not possible) and in a specific moment that gave it a shape (the existence of collaborative nets among institutions and research centres in different countries, with the purpose of implement and empower spaces to interchange experiences and define a collective space where knowledge can be build up).

In this article the experience of teaching practice is analysed carried out by a team formed by professors and students of the subject: Technical of Social Research in the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) Spain. The use of Internet has allowed to offer the students the possibility to carry out a real research. This activity is part of a wider didactic strategy. With her, and without it is this an exhaustive objective, we have sought to approach one of the aspects less usual in the habitual practices from distance teaching: doing real practices by team. In principle, we believe that many of the proposed objectives has been completed. However this it doesn’t impedeto conclude that, the same as in other fields, Internet has been shown more as a complement that as an exclusive relationship channel. To sum up we could say that, virtuality and reality may unite to be able to improve the quality from the teaching to distance.

The application of new information technologies to the environment of distance education, in terms of social research, implies certain methodological complexities. The special relationships between the researcher and the subjects of study, together with the ones established among teachers, pupils and distance education managers, drive to redesign the methodological plannings. The sociological studies on distance education entail two difficulties: in one hand, subjects who are very distant geographically and on the other hand, the evanescence of interpersonal relationships that are a main aspect in the non-face-to-face education.

Within the last years, the UNED has experienced a great rise in the profiles of its students, which implies an adaptation to the new demands inherent to the different groups of students that are enrolled in this university. According to these facts and taking into consideration the hypothesis that the handicapped students’ motivations, together with their study demands and needs, may differ from the ones other student groups have, handicapped students should be considered a main concern by the institution. So, paying attention to the handicapped students’ demands entails the implementation of general mechanisms of adaptation to the students, that at the same time could give an answer to the common needs that people who choose theDistance University show.

This article deals with the traditional discussions around distance education, its origins, development and trends. Beginning with the identification of these elements, it is argued that these discussions must be placed in a new context that makes easier to understand the mission of this kind of education and, especially, how to improve its viability and the conditions to make it operative. It is proposed that the debate around distance education return to more elemental issues, so that the discussion around open education should deal with technical aspects almost exclusively, in particular those that try to give answer to the question: How should open education be organized so that it is possible to reinterpretate and recreate knowledge? Two principles are proposed in order to improve distance education: freedom and democracy; and a scenario for iberoamerican education is proposed: learning freedom.

We are confronting an economic and social transformation so intense as it was the neolitic or industrial revolution. The arrival of the so called knowledge society imposes deep transformatios to school practice. Schools must be open to every child, as today social exclusion risks are higher for those who do not know how to use new technologies. These new technologies are to be a substancial part of school curriculumand activities.
