Communal Cattle in Mixteca Alta: From Colonial Times to the Twentieth Century. The Case of Tepelmeme
Mendoza García, J. Edgar

Resumen
This is an analysis of the political and economic factors than allowed the keeping of a herd of goats as communal property from the república de indios of the colonial period until municipal administrations at the beginning of the twentieth century in the region called the Mixteca Alta. The case of Tepelmeme, Oaxaca, is the basis of an account of the economic importance of communal property in the local governments of villages and municipios, as well of the opposition of villages to liberal laws of the nineteenth century. In short, during the colonial period and part of the nineteenth century, communal property was the main economic support of Indian villages. Not only was this property equivalent to communal savings kept for critical moments, but also an economic means that allowed financing public administration and paying for religious services. Moreover, it was a factor that gave cohesion to these villages and inserted them into a regional economy.

Resumen
In this paper, the circumstances under which the Real Decreto de Consolidación originated are described. Then, its contents are analyzed in order to examine its implications for the American population. It is emphasized that this measure had not either a social aim, or was oriented towards the benefit of the American realms, but that its purpose was to collect funds for the royal treasure. Moreover, it is shown that through the enforcement of the Consolidación not only the Church was affected, as is generally asumed, but also wide sectors of the civil population, since it encompassed property belonging to lay people. It forced as well those who borrowed from ecclesiastical capitals to pay the principal of the money they had in their hands.

Resumen
This paper attempts to shed new light on the origins and political organization of the Mayan group called the itzaes. Based on the study of glyphs and colonial sources in Maya, the author tries to establish for the itzaes where they came from and when they established themselves in Yucatán, as well as the political organization they imposed in cities like Chichén Itzá and Mayapán. Their return to El Petén at the end of the postclassical period, and the political organization they maintained until the Spanish conquest in 1697, are analyzed. The Spanish conquest implied the obliteration of that reign and a new political composition whose study has been neglected until now.

Resumen
In this paper the author sets out to analyze the different elements that influenced the conformation of the identity of the elite that dominated Mérida's society, in Yucatan, during the second half of the nineteenth century. This elite was composed of Spaniards that established themselves in this city, and of Yucatecans of Spanish descent that were born there. Throughout this period, the members of this elite dominated the economy, politics and culture of Yucatan, a domination that lasted into the first decades of the twentieth century.
