Our purpose is to find out how the photographic images of the saltpetre mines, the men who inhabited them, the industry that was developed from them, and the desert landscapes on which towns were built, have fed, reaffirmed and ordered a social and collective memory, subjective and personal, and also have imprinted in the "object photo" a double aesthetic and symbolic connotation. The study of memory -individual and/or collective- and the way in which it is ordered and expressed, constitutes a central element to understand how the life experiences are omitted, exalted and remembered; and also how what has not yet been lived is revived.

The present work approaches the importance of the photographic staging as the accurate presentation of the elite and its modernity project in Latin America, in the midst of a continuing process of the model established by the European tradition. One of the most effective discourses in order to achieve this aim is the Venezuelan Manuel Antonio Carrefio's Handbook of Urbanity and Good Manners (Manual de urbanidad y buenas maneras). The portrait photograph joins the bourgeois compliance that fulfills concrete social needs which are at the service of the national conscience and the 'good citizen'.

The daguerreotypes are the oldest photographs ever to arrive to Chile. Their irruption generated four epistemic phenomena: photography like modern instrument in a traditional society; the articulation of a principle of fictional reality taken from the aesthetic of personal representation; the constitution of taxonomic and gender categories; and the articulation of a proxemics of daguerreotypes which primarily confonn a field of disguising representations with organization, exhibition and articulation precepts of contradictory imageries.

The mortuary photography, or photography of the deceased, was a common practice since the appearance of the daguerreotype in the middle of 19th Century until the first decades of the 20th Century. This article tries to explain why Chis custom, not only accepted but also well spread at least in the western world for more than sixty years, is today interpreted like a macabre practice.

The photographic image is the contemporary image par excellence, that expresses a complex power as a trace and material evidence of reality. Photography also acts like an index, that is to say, a physical and material equivalent of memory. In this way, by means of those images -where the content is the memory -evidence-, photography controls representation and becomes a document. The relevance of these photographic documents lies in their being the ultimate achievement of the so-called 'objective vision': accurate, truthful and natural.

The anorexic body, taken as a media campaign object, serves to clarify certain dominant paradigms of body, beauty and consumption, simultaneously disguising in its own display the morbid fate of the culture that admits those models. The text, beyond anorexia nervosa, interprets the human body as field and center of the indiscriminate regulatory management and the amazing abuse of the market and media.

The Popular Lira is strongly linked to its visual images, among which certain photographs appear from time to time. From this point, the author interconnects three analytical dimensions that are consequence of the universe those images built: a reflection about the identity, an interpretative reading of the spaces and times, as much in the production as in the use of such expression and, finally, its stately uses. All of these dimensions are crossed by an epistemology conceming the popular element.

This article tríes to locate the content of "Time that is divided", -first essay on photography of Ronal Kay's book From the space here. Signals for an American glance, edited in 1980-, in its context of critical writing, and also attempts to understand and interpret the significant projections of this text regarding the photographic theory developed in Chile.
