The medieval Christian society, strongly hierarchized, built a view of the world, where the Other is marginalized. In the Romanesque in Portugal, the alterity images are expressed in the fine arts through the illustration of the monster. The dragons, the mermaids and the centaurs play a place of subversion of the divine order. The wild man, whose representation scarces in the 15th century, became frequents in the burial sculpture and in the later gothics illuminated manuscripts. We want just to refer the demon, the dragons and the wild man wich rarely assume a character terrific as it is showed in another cultures. Most of this images are not aggressive, waking up a certain fascination for those who contemplate them. For this people that lived in the border or inside of the christian world, although scarce, the representations are centered in Arabian and Jew images. This Other appears in marginal positions and some them demonised, according the treatement of the artist of Lorvão Apocalypse, reflecting the anguish provoked by the advance Almóada.

The figure of «the other» in Medieval Literature is presented as the inhabitant from far away lands, out of the centre established around the Ecumene. Its physiognomy and habits clash with the Occidental ones what makes it be considered even strange. The monstrous populations are located in Asia and particularly in India. They constitute a compulsory chapter in clerical encyclopaedias describing the world, from which they are propagated to romance texts. Travellers’ stories complete and renew the previous perspective, introducing, apart from the traditional lists of features, peculiar testimonies of their personal experiences. The Roman de Alexandre by Alexandre de Paris, Le Devisement du Monde by Marco Polo and Le Livre by Jean de Mandeville provide for a different vision of the «alter».

The present paper provides a vision of the Skandinavians which is certainly different from the one other Europeans have received from the Middle Ages. Since this information was obtained almost always from their enemies or else from peoples with radically different cultural values, the cliché still existing in the XXI century should not surprise us. Besides the historical data in sources different from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, linguistic evidence suggests that the relationship between the Scandinavians and other Europeans was much closer and less violent than we may think (at least in the case of Britain).

An analysis of Le Canarien, the chronicle of the French conquest of the Canaries at the beginning of the 15th C, is carried out to observe the relationship between identity and alterity in the processes of overseas expansion. Such analysis is achieved through the archetypes used by Europeans to define human and natural realities.

This paper is divided into two parts. In part I, we are going to analyze the process of born mestization and acculturation in Hispano-America, after the «discovery» of Columbus and the Spanish conquest. Taking into account the first half of sixteenth-century text (Columbus, Leyes de Indias, Hernán Cortés), we are going to also analyze the tensions between politics, and the Spanish administration as well as the presence of missionary work. In part II, we are going to delve into the process of communication between Spaniards and Native Americans, considering the following aspects: non-verbal communication, the introduction of Native American words into Spanish and the role of interpreters as well as the acquisition of the native languages on the part of the Spanish missionaries.

The life and work of the scholars Demetrio Lucas and Marcos Musurus will be the base to analyze the relationship of Byzantine Greek authors with their occidental colleagues during the 15th and 16th centuries. Such relationship goes further than the field of Philology, edition and translation of texts and the teaching of Greek in the European Universities of this period.
