In 2018, Ingenium began a large-scale collections move, consolidating artefacts from four rental warehouses into a new purpose built storage facility. Collection hazards were assessed, prioritised and treated according to Ingenium’s comprehensive Collection Risk Management Program (CRMP), placing health and safety at the forefront of collections care. This paper will present hazard assessment and mitigation in one warehouse, the Building 2421 Reserve Collection, showing the challenges overcome to move a large industrial collection on a tight schedule and with limited staffing and resources. A selection of case studies will provide examples of hazard mitigation in artefacts containing asbestos, radioactivity, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury. The case studies demonstrate how simple solutions and triage treatments were implemented by conservators and specialised contractors in order to mitigate collection hazards during the move project. The Building 2421 Reserve Collection move was completed in December 2021 and the full collections move was completed in August 2022.

This work presents the set of preliminary studies for the conservation and restoration of the fountain in plaza Weyler (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The working methodology is interdisciplinary and aims to identify and characterize the construction materials, along with the products generated in the alteration processes, to determine the mechanisms and causes of deterioration. Two marbles of different origins belonging to two construction phases of the aforementioned square, a traditional mortar of limestone and sand as mortar, calcareous concretions resulting from filtrations and biological colonization by microalgae have been identified. A method of non-invasive analysis has been used to determine the extent of certain pathologies. In this way, it will be possible to define a specific proposal of action to deal with the pathologies affecting this cultural asset.

The study focuses on the rise of a first generation of architects aware of restoration restoration practices according to the Renaissance cultural and artistic environment, and resulting from classical treatises. How to intervene in medieval pre-existences was a problem that these architects had to face and solve, because despite considering Gothic undesirable, it was essential to find a way to ensure the ‘conformity’ of the building, without violating the mutual ‘harmony’ of its parts, according to the principle of concinnitas, as stated by Alberti. Taking the formulation proposed by Panofsky about the modes of action found in medieval pre-existences: overlay, continuance and compromise, and according to Italian examples previously studied, we sought to evaluate the practice, in Portugal, of this modus operandi. The identification of several national case studies from the Modern period allows us to substantiate this operation and to cast a new view on the conceptual and practical genesis of architectural restoration in Portugal.

The altarpiece is a heritage asset with specific formal characteristics, which justifies its registration in favour of its conservation and dissemination. Given its three-dimensional nature, this study proposes the use of the HBIM methodology to create a digital replica of the altarpiece, which constitutes an information model for professional, academic or informative use. Its application involves a set of processes, intervening agents and many options regarding tools -hardware and software- used according to the needs. We present two case studies: an altarpiece in its original location and another moved to a workshop, which poses different challenges on how to capture its physical configuration, what information to add and how to present it to the user. We propose a methodology for documenting altarpieces initiated in the Canary Islands and that could be extrapolated to the study of altarpieces from different periods and geographies.

The application of biocides to control microbial proliferation in stone materials is nowadays a rather common practice. In the Coimbra´s UNESCO World heritage monuments, biocide treatments rely on the application of Biotin T and Preventol R80. However, the application of these formulations often occurs without the complete knowledge of microbial communities’ susceptibility to their application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of these compounds and compare them with a commercial version of Ocimum basilicum essential oil, against various fungal species present in these areas. Through the application of in vitro antifungal activity assays, we were able to verify that, in general, Biotin T rather than Preventol R80 was more efficient against all tested fungi. In addition, the commercial version of the Ocimum basilicum essential oil also exhibited good results and might be an alternative option to be taken into consideration in future interventions in these monuments.

This study presents an analytical investigation and electrochemical conservation treatment for a group of four copper alloy artifacts excavated from the archaeological cemetery that was located on the site of the Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan. The chemical analyses of internal alloys showed that a bracelet and a spatula were made of a quaternary copper–zinc–tin–lead alloy, a bracelet was made of a copper–silver–zinc alloy, and a spatula was made of a copper–tin, a bronze alloy. The corrosion products analyses indicated the presence oxides, carbonates and chlorides of copper, in addition to silver chlorides for the copper–silver–zinc alloy bracelet. The metallographic examination showed various degrees of working and heat treatment in the manufacturing process of the artifacts. The potentiostatic reduction technique was effective in reducing the corrosion products on the artifacts, which were finally coated with Paraloid B–72 to prevent corrosion reoccurrence.

The Pinelo House-Palace, a singular Renaissance building in Seville, was transformed to be a guest house known as Pensión Don Marcos between 1885 and 1964. Between 1969 and 1981, it was restored by the architect Rafael Manzano Martos to host the new headquarters of the Reales Academias Sevillanas de Buenas Letras y de Bellas Artes. In order to analyze the restoration process, the architect’s private archive and other related sources have been investigated. The material available has been compared with modern photographs and plans to evaluate the extent and criteria of the restoration accomplished in coffered ceilings, plaster works and other elements of new construction. In 2010 Rafael Manzano was awarded with the Driehaus Prize by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture to honor his contributions in the advocacy of architectural heritage and traditions, introducing a new award with his name in Spain and Portugal.
