Resumen
In advanced countries, people are beginning to think with alarm that exponential population growth, industrialization and consumption will lead, in the not too distant future, to a true economic and demographic collapse, either as a consequence of the depletion of natural resources, insufficient food or increased environmental pollution. We maintain that the growth of GNP is an important objective of the development process but that it should not be used as the only indicator of the well-being of the community. However, the defense of ecology - for those who can enjoy it - should not make us forget the most pressing needs of the poorest two-thirds of humanity.

Resumen
Italy is presented with three possible courses of action on the international political scene: the Western European integration process; the development of relations with Eastern Europe and the USSR, and the Mediterranean basin. Here these aspects are analyzed in the current situation, arguing that the European nation should pursue three main objectives: 1) maintain a patient and intelligent presence in the European Community (institutional objectives); 2) demand a special role for the delineation of common policies that interest it (development objectives); and 3) linking the establishment of new relations with the East and the formulation of a European foreign defense policy, which would ensure the stability of the region (security objectives).

Resumen
This paper discusses the main thesis that has been developed by the Club of Rome (CoR) that maintains that, unless measures are taken in time, the effects of the exponential growth of the population and its consumption are accumulating pressure on resources and the limited capacity for self-regulation of the ecosystem will have as consequence a profound degradation of the material and cultural standard of humanity. An attempt is then made to indicate the main problem areas that comprise such affirmations and to comment on them. Finally, there is a discussion of the political aspects of this problem, particularly in view of the present international system and the situation of underdeveloped countries.

Resumen
Australians are engaged in a debate regarding their military forces and their possible regional role. The significance of this debate and its relationship to Australians' attitudes towards the outside world can be judged by examining its implications vis-à-vis the traditional position of this nation on the problems of its military and political security. Assuming that the examination will have to lead to a definition and that this would eventually be followed by a retraction of some existing commitments, where will Australians look for the opportunity to express a growing sense of independence? The three areas that challenge Australian policy are the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the Pacific area. The Pacific, in contrast to both the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia, is for Australia a source of inspiration and power.

Resumen
The role of countries that are neither big nor small in international politics is still a comparatively neglected subject. The role of the middle powers can be examined according to two basic systems of international politics: the dualistic and the multiple. In a cold war situation, the middle powers, together with most of the other members of the state system, face two great dangers: becoming victims of the central rivalry and being objects of usurpation and even being eaten up by one of them. The concern of the middle powers, in the face of such a challenge, must be centered on the problem that means avoiding being reduced to the category of weak and powerless nations.
