This article analyses the plans for a new population inland from La Plana de Castelló (in the north of the Region of Valencia), a process of territorial colonisation that took place under the auspices of what was known as the Fuero Alfonsino (second half of the eighteenth century). The example of Benadressa gives an insight into the complex relationships of power and ideology that were present in plans of this type, which were private initiatives but an integral part of the economic and territorial projects of the Enlightenment era. It also marks another chapter in the profound transformations that La Plana de Castelló suffered in the Modern Age, based mainly on the spread of cultivated land over former pastures, vacant land and marshland. This process led to interesting conflicts between agriculture and cattle farming, and between the different uses for the water from la Rambla de la Viuda.

According to 1991 and 2001 Census data, commuting has experienced an important growth in Andalusia, especially among neighbour municipalities. This paper explores the factors linked with that growth, both as causes and as consequences: changes in the composition of the working population in terms of sector of activity and socioeconomic groups, the spatial widening of local labour markets and the evolution of commuting spatial organization, particularly in metropolitan areas. Findings show that a majority of factors taken into account have a significant contribution to the expansion and intensification of commuting flows. Among these factors developments in the organization and structure of the urban system are identified as the main reasons for such commuting growth. However, these developments are also, to a certain degree, a result of changes in economic activities and socioeconomic structure, and in the associated local labour markets.

This paper presents the features of mobility in the Community of Madrid. On one hand, the increasing of displacements and flows trends moving to the periphery are stated, which points out a not sustainable mobility. On the other hand, Madrid presents some positive peculiarities that allow it to have higher rates of public transport than in the rest of European metropolitan areas. Following this characterisation of mobility, the explicative keys of this pattern are analysed and we conclude with some remarks on the ways to follow to achieve a sustainable mobility, enhanced in its territorial model.
