The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of context and comparative analysis for the interpretation of corpus languages. The interpretation of the Mycenaean verb form i-je-to- will serve as a case study to illustrate this point. This form is attested in a Pylian tablet recording important offerings to several deities. As will be shown, the context of the tablet is crucial for assessing the validity of the different proposals made so far, as is the comparison of this term with its cognates in other ancient IE languages. Finally, the continuity of the term in the first millennium is going to be traced. Continuity is not essential for the interpretation of Mycenaean terms but the existence of Greek cognates affords greater credibility

This article presents a new interdisciplinary project for compiling a digital collection of Greek and Latin sources dealing with ancient mineral-medicinal thermalism. For the first time ever, the project bring together different types of historical and textual sources in a single publication, and also gather, analyse and expand on previous bibliographic attempts on this subject from the philological, historical, archaeological, and ephigraphic perspective. The collection will provide direct access to original sources for the study of ancient thermalism including translations into English and Spanish with a critical, innovative, and updated vision, meeting a long-standing demand by the community of researchers in this area. This new tool will be accessible online for everyone interested in this topic, and aims for both continuity and permanence, while always being endorsed by scientific and specialized criteria, and in constant review.

In our paper we intend to verify the effectiveness of the different “translation strategies” applied to the translation of the Christian Bible through a historical and textual analysis of various biblical versions into two vernacular languages of Western Europe (German and Spanish). Because of the anthropological particularity of the books that compose it (the postulate of its divine inspiration), the possible application of a translation strategy will depend on the position that the translator maintains regarding the sacred character of the text: if he/she considers it a sacred and untouchable text, if he/she admits the variation of the formal tenor of the text while the core message is saved, or if, in order to facilitate easy reading and understanding of the message, greater textual alterations are allowed. We will examine whether the translation strategy (implicit or explicit) has truly been decisive in producing mismatched translations, both in the meaning, and also in the literality and literariety (readability) of the texts.

This article presents a critical study of the systematisation and the margins of the transmission of the sciences of the ancients into Arabic during the Middle Ages. To address this analysis, we will first focus on the dream of Caliph al-Ma’mūn that gave rise to the first translation project in the Arab-Islamic world. Secondly, we will examine the unpublished translation theories that al-Ŷāḥiz placed at the service of al-Ma’mūn’s project. Thirdly, we will explore the close relationship that these theories had with the Mu‘tazil. doctrine adopted by the political institutions to accelerate the process of transmission of the Greek scientific legacy to Arabic. Finally, we will analysethe ideological causes of the decline of translation in Eastern Islam and how the translation heritage became the raw material for the translation circle created in the Islamic West to transmit the scientific knowledge of the ancients to the Latin world. translation heritage became the raw material for the translation circle created in the Islamic West to transmit the scientific knowledge of the ancients to the Latin world.

The concepts of translation function (skopos, Reiss & Vermeer 1991: 95-104) and quality have been the subject of substantial discussion within the area of Translation Studies. They are, in our opinion, two closely bound concepts, to the extent that the quality of a translated text can only be fully assessed when the skopos for which it was created is known. In this respect, despite the frequent connection of translation with the purpose of making an original discourse (ST) available to speakers of a different language (TL), several authors over the centuries have acknowledged the concurrence of other equally common aims of translation. The main objective of this paper is to discuss some aspects of the different Latin versions of the Qur’an prepared between the years 1143 and 1680, reviewing their intended function(s), how they circulated across Christian Europe and how their quality was perceived by their initiators, potential readers and scholars within the historical framework of Christian-Islamic confrontation.
