This paper aims to elucidate the contribution of physics to the realization of the Stoic ideal of wisdom. For this aim, I will focus specifically on the work Naturales Quaestiones by the Roman Stoic Seneca. I will show that in this work we can find four contributions of the study of nature for Stoic wisdom: (i) knowledge of divinity, (ii) moral progress, (iii) the correct use of natural resources and, (iv) the release from superstition. By examining these four contributions, I will show that, contrary to what some scholars have argued, physics maintains reciprocal relations of collaboration with the other two parts of philosophy: ethics and logic.

John the Scot Eriugena’s gnoseological reflections owe a great deal to Origen, especially to Origen’s logico-theological dialectics (heavily indebted to Plato and the Stoics), system of sciences and apokatastasis, and in fact built a Christian Neoplatonic epistemology. I will investigate Eriugena’s relation to Origen’s notion of logic-dialectic as ultimately dovetailing with theology and explore Eriugena’s view of dialectics from his commentary on Martianus (who devoted a full book to Dialectica) through his De divina praedestinatione (which combated a view that ultimately stemmed from a hardening of Augustine’s theology) to his masterpiece, Periphyseon. The last work in its title, structure, procedure and contents depends on Origen and in some respects on Augustine as well, to the point that Eriugena endeavored to achieve a synthesis of the two—a very difficult task. In Periphyseon, as I shall point out, Christian Neoplatonic dialectics comes to the fore as a full-blown onto-gnoseo-theology.

The main topic addressed in this introduction is demarcation between ancient and modern knowledge. My idea is that there are important differences between modern and ancient epistemologies, but they can hardly be treated in general terms (taking ancient epistemology as a whole and opposing it to modern). Specific differences need to be evaluated almost case by case, while the hermeneutic practice itself turns the very idea of demarcation into something problematic, if not paradoxical. I analyze Lloyd Gerson's view, driven by a general intent of demarcation between ancient and modern knowledge, its strengths and weaknesses. Then I compare it with the more complex approach that David Konstan proposed for the demarcation between different cultural contexts. In the second part, I introduce the volume's contributions, placing them into three thematic groups, Theology, Praxis and Hermeneutics, which identify as many relevant points regarding the problem of demarcation.

This paper will attempt to show, by drawing on a key passage in his Commentary on the First Alcibiades of Plato, that Proclus understands knowledge as a tension towards the perfection of the soul. This pursuit entails a conversion from multiplicity to unity and is underpinned by a strong exhortation, with clear Platonic origins, to distance oneself from the unfamiliar in order to discover the likeness to the divine. Such conversion implies moving away from sensation, imagination and opinion so that the soul can recognize itself as a “plenitude of rational principles.” These principles are nothing more than images of the unitary, full and sleepless life that the Intellect possesses as an incorporeal essence. Its perfection lies in eternity because it contains the unity of true realities within itself

In this paper, my claim is that the Cynics’ emphasis on practice and asceticism does not so much mean a renunciation of philosophy as knowledge or science, as it does a renewal of what knowledge means in practical terms. For them, knowledge does not rest on building a theory with the purpose of applying it to practice: it consists instead in inventing the means to deploy their ideal of a simple and virtuous life in a social and political context marked by domination and accumulation, and founded on the widespread use of violence. To this end, Diogenes invents what we might call a form of “tiny knowledge”. Within the general framework of the Cynics’ “adaptation to circumstances”, this kind of knowledge is a tactics that operates directly on bodies and practices to enable the subjects to regain possession of themselves as “autarchic”, i.e. independent, subjects. This is illustrated by the folding of the coat, which Diogenes initiated.

The article confronts the differences between the thinking of F. Rosenzweig and J. Patočka regarding the foundations and goals of war and its relationship with peace, reaching two conclusions. First, the meaning that each of them assigns to war presupposes an essentially different understanding of the world as such. Second, the both agree that it is only possible to overcome war through a revelation of a divine nature that implies sacrifice.

This essay reflects on the place of philosophical practice in contemporary literate culture. The author presents philosophy as an intellectual practice and a language proposal founded on imaginative and critical wisdom. It also shares an imaginative focus with the arts and literature, and the cognitive passion of the sciences. His appreciation and understanding of an integrated human experience appears to be a pillar of his practice in the age of science.

In dialogue with the concept of colonial mimesis, this essay explores philosophy as an anthropological object through which we know how power operates through words and desire. The category of progress is discussed to consider colonial mimesis as a desire that persists despite the consummation of the promise of modernity in the decline of the conditions of possibility of life itself. The author concludes that philosophy from the ruins allows us to map the operation of power through the epistemic bases of modernity.

This article presents a more sapiential than scientific idea of philosophy, placing it between science and art. The author states that the idea of consensus accepted by the scientific community is not achieved in philosophy since the problems it addresses are not conclusively resolved. Then, it is shown how this idea of philosophy operates through the example of the controversy of determinism and freedom.

In the preface, I recall the occasion that gave rise to the volume, an international symposium organized at the University of Guadalajara in October 2022. I also acknowledge many friends and colleagues who contributed to the conference and the volume, and dedicate the book to the memory of David Konstan, classicist and dear friend who passed away in 2024.
