The tradition of the commentary on the Cántico espiritual consists of three families of manuscripts: CA, CA’ and CB. All the codices are apographs with the exception of the Ms. S (Sanlúcar de Barrameda) which transmits the text of the CA branch with autograph corrections and glosses. Elia detected in CB a suspicious contamination of copies that proves the apocryphal nature of this version: CB follows a CA’ witness in the initial part and then passes ex abrupto to Ms. S (or perhaps, if it existed, to a copy of that idiograph). This study shows that, within CB (in the explanation of the first lira), there was also a contamination of readings, and that from the beginning the writer of the ‘elongated version’ had to work with at least a couple of manuscripts. Furthermore, the revision technique used by the mystic is explored in depth, with the goal of an ecdotic representation of the last stage in the elaboration of the idiograph: the distinction between additions and glosses, alternative variants, complex cases of rewriting.

From the concept of “verbal emblems” the set of three compositions by Agustín de Tejada Páez, collected in Poética silva, which were intended to give verbal body to a symbolic ceremonial device of the death of Philip ii, are exhaustively explained. Going to a vast bibliographical apparatus, which does not leave behind any essential contribution on the funerary rituals and the emblematic values of that time used in the funeral pyres, an explanatory model is configured where the poems synthesize the social use of images and their qualifying power. Thus, a set of equivalences is established between each emblematic image and its values with a sense of symbolic identities. The diction in the iconic-verbal is multiplied in the plural game of the iconic-visual, in such a way that word and gaze overlap, entailing a framework of visions that expose the supreme speculative entity of the verses.

The version in royal octaves of Lucan's La Farsalia written by Juan de Jáuregui (1583-1641) has been transmitted by two main testimonies that allow us to address the main theoretical and methodological questions concerning author's philology. One is the autograph manuscript BNE 3707, which contains innumerable amendments made by the author; the other is the princeps edition, published in Madrid in 1684. On the basis of the external and internal particularities of these two testimonies and their textual analysis, a hypothesis about the lengthy compositional process of the work is put forward.

Reconsidering the tradition of so-called authorial philology, this article, on the one hand, focuses upon the definition of this discipline before the Contini’s criticism of variants (especially during the nineteenth century), and, secondly, reviews the interest not strictly linguistic-stylistic –not even only literary– from which some of the great works in this field proceed. After a quick review of significant editions of Renaissance texts and cases of different sizes, the essay Come lavorava l’Ariosto by Gianfranco Contini is finally examined, with the aim of verifying and re-evaluating the variants analysed therein and their categorisation.

Although it might be surprising, in the field of the Spanish epic poetry of the Golden Age, exclusively printed traditions prove to be productive in terms of author variants. The article delves into this issue, offering a useful repertoire of significant cases, if not emblematic, and highlighting the textual concerns of the authors themselves, who intervene in their work, retouching and correcting it at the last minute, or revising and modifying it over the years, with a zeal superior to that of the ‘traditional’ book of poetry, conceived as a collection of various rhymes.

This paper aims to inform the reader about the researches currently underway on the tradition of Pietro Bembo’s epistolary by examining the specific case of the manuscript Boncompagni E 1 of the Vatican Library. The codex is commonly considered by scholars to be the earliest nucleus of the Bembo epistolary. But through the use of the most up-to-date techniques of investigation in epistolography and authorial philology, the essay demonstrates that the manuscript Boncompagni E 1 was originally an anthology collection prepared for private use by a Bembo’s disciple (possibly Vittore Soranzo). Our author got hold of the manuscript only later and he used it to increase his collection of letters that he wanted to publish in print.
