Aims: Supernumerary teeth represent teeth or structures similar to dental elements, erupted or not, that manifest beyond the quantity commonly found in both dentitions. In this article, a series of cases of children who presented with supernumerary teeth and were treated at a public pediatric dentistry service will be reported. Materials and Methods: The children and guardians presented themselves spontaneously to the emergency service reporting discomfort arising from the emergence of the tooth or were referred from primary care units. Patients were followed from diagnosis of the condition, complementary exams, treatment and control. During consultations, information was recorded in clinical records and photographs. Results: Four children were followed for this series of cases: two boys, six years old, presence of a supernumerary tooth in the anterior region of the maxilla, compatible with the diagnosis of mesiodent; a girl, 7 years old, presence of a supernumerary tooth in the anterior region of the maxilla between teeth 22 and 63; and a boy, 7 years old, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, presence of two supernumerary teeth, one mesiodens and the other located in the region of the lower lateral incisor. The treatment chosen for all cases was the extraction of supernumerary teeth. Conclusions: Supernumerary teeth present themselves as relatively recurrent conditions in the pediatric dentistry clinic and their management requires diagnosis, treatment plan, effective treatment and longitudinal monitoring.

The presence of a foreign body adhered to the hard palate in children is scarcely reported, and health teams may not know this situation. The difficult physical examination, combined with an inaccurate previous history, can impair and delay the diagnosis. The possibility of swallowing or aspiration of the object can be life-threatening, highlighting the importance of prompt diagnosis. This paper aims to report a case of a twenty-month-old patient who had a foreign body adhered to the palate for 21 days with diagnosis of hyperplasia from food burn or neoplasia. After clinical examination, the foreign body was removed in the dental chair with gentle physical restraint of the child's movements by the team with aid of the caretaker. A proper physical examination is essential to facilitate diagnosis and often simple approaches allow for safe removal of the foreign body.

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a common developmental dental defect of permanent teeth, that negatively affects enamel and dentin, predominantly affecting permanent molars and occasionally impacting permanent incisors. Clinical manifestations of HMI are patient-specific and can be categorized by the extent and severity of the enamel defects. These classifications range from mild to severe and may include the loss of tooth structure. Additionally, HMI can give rise to pronounced aesthetic challenges and may elicit hypersensitivity in some cases. This study aimed to address gaps in literature by describing treatment for pediatric patients with HMI and managing dentin hypersensitivity. These case reports document patients with MIH-caused hypersensitivity who underwent photobiomodulation (PBM) treatment using a low-power infrared laser in four irradiation sessions. The following irradiation parameters were applied: energy of 2J, output power of 100 mW, for 20 s, in continuous mode, with a beam area of 0.04 cm2, per point. The irradiation points targeted on the affected teeth were: one in the cervical area, one in the apical region of each root, and one in the occlusal region of the molars. Pain levels were measured using the Visual Analogue Scale before and after treatment. Following laser therapy sessions, the patients remained under observation and reported no complaints associated with the condition. It can be concluded that PBM therapy with a low-power laser effectively treats hypersensitivity in MIH, controlling discomfort and pain to improve the patient's quality of life.

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous, multifactorial developmental disorder that begins early in life and evolves throughout the lives of affected individuals. The main characteristics of ASD are deficits in communication and social interaction, restrictive interests, and repetitive, sensory, and motor behaviors that generally require lifelong support. In patients with ASD, comorbidities are very common, including periodontal disease, allergies, gastrointestinal diseases, dysbiosis, and alterations of the oral and intestinal microbiome. Objective: To describe the characteristics of the oral microbiome in patients with ASD aged 6 to 18 years through a narrative review. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was conducted in the following databases: Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. The search was carried out from January 2024 to July 2024. Results: After analyzing the publications that met the proposed objectives, three articles were selected for data extraction and interpretation. Conclusion: Alterations in the oral microbiome of patients with ASD can be found. Consequently, understanding the functioning of the gut-brain axis as a complex system that can express how the state of the gut might affect cognitive development, and vice versa, is necessary. Understanding this axis offers new horizons for creating alternative strategies in the diagnosis and treatment of ASD.

Facial fractures are uncommon and challenging situations in early childhood. When facial trauma occurs, involvement of mandibular structures such as the condyle is highly prevalent. The present study aimed to report a case of condylar fracture associated with trauma in early childhood, including the diagnosis and management. A 6-year-old female patient presented to the Pediatric Dental Emergency Care at the Children's Specialty Clinic, Baby-Clinic, at the State University of Londrina (UEL), with a complaint of prolonged retention of tooth 51 and the need for orthodontic treatment. During the anamnesis, the legal guardian reported providing preventive dental care at the Basic Health Unit and a history of trauma at 3 and 6 months of age. On clinical examination, facial asymmetry and deviation of the midline during mouth opening were observed. Palpation revealed inadequate movement of the left temporomandibular joint. Complementary exams confirmed the diagnosis of condylar fracture and consolidation of the left condyle in an abnormal position. As a course of action, the multidisciplinary team opted to follow the case until the jawbone had fully developed. Based on this report, we can conclude that it is the pediatric dentist's duty to be alert to skeletal changes in children to avoid underdiagnosis of severe bone fractures and their sequelae, ensuring quality of life for the child and his/her family.

Introduction: Social changes and the increasing use of information and communication technologies have altered educational patterns and the development of healthy habits in children. During childhood and preadolescence, parenting styles influence the formation of health habits, such as oral hygiene and nutrition. Excessive use of new technologies without supervision can have negative effects on children's well-being. Objectives: To describe the predominant educational patterns and evaluate oral health habits in children and preadolescents, as well as the influence of the use of new technologies. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational pilot study was carried out on a sample of 35 children aged 7 to 11 years. A questionnaire was used to assess oral hygiene habits, diet, and the use of new technologies. Results: A significant relationship was found between the authoritative educational pattern and the person who filled out the survey, mostly mothers (p = 0.03). Significant associations were also observed between the use of new technologies and brushing frequency (p = 0.035), the mothers’ educational level and brushing frequency (p = 0.029), the children’s sex and brushing frequency (p = 0.03), soft drink consumption and brushing frequency (p = 0.045), and between the children’s age and the use of new technologies (p = 0.04). Conclusions: The authoritative parenting style predominated in the sample and was associated with healthy hygiene and diet habits, as well as the establishment of limits on the use of technologies.
