Verification agencies emerge as new communicative actors against disinformation fueled by digitalization. The fact that they replicate typical media procedures in terms of content selection and competitive logic for the audience makes it pertinent to analyze whether, as in the case of the latter, there are biases that condition their task. A methodological triangulation of in-depth interviews, a descriptive quantitative approach and an analysis of the content analyzed by the five main fact-checking agencies of Spain and Portugal is proposed in order to confirm the existence of ideological biases of the content that is debunked.

This study examined 4 883 Facebook comments on the female protagonists from the Cartel Crew series. The objective is to analyze the parasocial relationships established between the audience and the protagonists. The results revealed that behavior and personality were more frequently mentioned, with simple comments and parasocial relationships being more prevalent. Empathy was reflected in the justification of the characters’ behaviors. Another key finding was the limited feedback on the Facebook page, as only 6.6 % of the comments mentioned the characters. Overall, comments were more negative than positive toward the protagonists, criticizing Nicole’s appearance or accent, as well as Stephanie’s behavior, indicating an unfriendly parasocial relationship from the followers.

Media competence has gained relevance in the 21st century as an essential skill to face the challenges of the media environment. This essay explores its objectives, seeking epistemological support to facilitate its understanding. A relationship between media competence, Greek paideia and maieutics is proposed, questioning the positivist paradigm that has predominated in the study of the media. Finally, elements from classical schools of thought are integrated to enrich its approach, offering an epistemological foundation that reinforces its purpose of social and individual good.

Social networks are a key ecosystem for science communication, as well as for media and scientific literacy. This research analyzes the usefulness of threads in X for dissemination and research, involving teachers and students of higher education. Using an empirical-inductive approach and a non-experimental-descriptive design, a 17-item questionnaire (α= 0.7) was administered to 302 subjects (194 students and 108 academic professionals). The findings highlight X as a valuable tool and the importance of diversifying strategies for rigorous content curation.

This paper analyzes the integration of media and information literacy (MIL) in Ecuador’s public policies, using the IGO model to prioritize strategic actions. The research, carried out in collaboration with several entities, highlights the need to incorporate AMI in the national curriculum and to train citizens in media consumption and production. It concludes that a public policy of digital transformation based on MIL is key to improve the credibility of digital content and close the digital divide.

This article presents preliminary results of a research in which 27 Mexican telenovelas are analyzed to understand key aspects of the representation of alterity and racism. The intersectional analysis, focused on identifying the skin tone of the casts, shows the preponderance of certain ethnophenotypes that reveal a racist bias in telenovelas. The analytical model developed here aims to generate indicators for the measurement of patterns of socio-cultural diversity in audiovisual production and public policies for the regulation of the sector.

To understand the effect of gendered mediation on the expression of political and electoral preferences, 170 opinion pieces were analyzed. These articles had been published in the newspapers El Universal, La Jornada, and Reforma after the debates organized during Mexico’s 2024 presidential campaign, in which a woman emerged victorious for the first time in the nation’s history. The analysis of discursive actions –self-construction of the speaker, construction of interlocutors, and construction of adversaries– made it possible to determine how gendered mediation shaped five dominant frames: the emphasis on the figure of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as the strategist behind Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s candidacy; the construction of the debates by means of war metaphors; the insistence on the female candidates’ emotionality; the allusion to their physical appearance as a recurring theme; and the symbolic violence expressed in the various ways in which they were named. These frames evidence the persistence of sexist and misogynistic characteristics reinforcing partisan political journalism in the hegemonically male media sphere.

The nature of the transformation in journalism infrastructure in Mexico during 2015-2024 is described using a multi-year data source covering the national territory at the municipal level. The analysis found evidence of the decline of newspapers, fragmentation of the newspaper market, and a very small advance in the number of newspaper deserts at the state and municipal levels. It is suggested that the infrastructure analysis should be complemented with studies focusing on the attributes of the information reaching communities.
