In the following article, two conditions related to sight loss, amblyopia (ἀμβλυωπία) and amaurosis (ἀμαύρωσις), will be analysed drawing on two types of sources: medical and lexicographical. The verbs derived from these two diseases will also be studied: ἀμβλυωπέω, ἀμβλυώττω and ἀμαυρόω. The aim of the study is to determine, by means of these sources, to what extent one condition differed from the other and, additionally, to shed some light on the usage of these terms and their corresponding verbs by the ancients.

Acts of denunciation are among the communication intentions that preside over epistolary writing. In this context, classical literature bequeathed some examples that, under the topic of adultery, constitute, on the one hand, true death sentences, and, on the other, authentic pledges of love and seduction. In this perspective, we propose to analyse and comment on three epistolary messages, two of them implicit — the “ominous signs” written on a double-sided tablet that Preto sends to his father-in-law, King Iobates (Iliad 6.157-17), and the accusation left behind by Phaedra to her husband Theseus (Euripides, Hippolytus 857-887) —, the third being an explicit letter: the one that Ovid imagined Phaedra would write to her lover Hippolytus (Epistulae heroidum, 4).

The article examines the two stories included in the Library in which Cephalus is the protagonist, highlighting both their internal coherence and interdependence. Within the Athenian genealogies, Cephalus is the unfortunate husband of Procris: he is the victim of his wife's threatening character and the baleful power of her gifts. In the episode of the hunting of the Cadmean vixen, which precedes the conception of Herakles, the story emphasises the prodigious character of the dog, essential to Zeus' plan, and the fate of Cephalus, who becomes a founding hero.

Based on excerpts selected from Ovid's Heroides 10, this article analyses the effects that arise from the poet’s use of a mixture of poetic genres. In our view, this Ovidian work explores not only the relationship between epistle and elegy, but also some features of drama, such as dramatic irony. We argue, therefore, that Ariadne, who is both the heroine and author of the missive, through her writing and feminine voice, sets the boundaries of her scenic space and positions herself in it, performing her amorous quarrel through a literary piece that links dramatic genre to epistolary elegy.

In his dialogue Eudemus Aristotle develops two arguments against the “soul harmony” theory as a development of the criticism inherited from Plato. The first of these does not appear in the Phaedo, nor does it reoccur among the arguments that Aristotle later uses in De anima. Such singularity of the argument is accompanied by the interpretive difficulty it poses, as often highlighted by contemporary criticism. Our article intends to show that this original argument of the juvenile period is based on the “partial or defective deprivations” of the works of maturity, within the context of the “deprivations of active power”.

This paper focuses on Anth. 465 (Riese), a short poem which is believed to be a fragment from Petronius’ works, since Scaliger first attributed it to the author of the Satiricon. An in-depth analysis of the form and content of this small piece helps to identify the craft of the poet who wrote the lines and better understand its intentions. An internal review of the poem and a comparison with other texts tend to confirm the attribution to Petronius and allow to go beyond the strictly parodic or satirical purpose that some critics have attributed to the fragment.

The exhortations present in Xenophon's Memorabilia, Plato's Euthydemus and Aristotle's Protrepticus instigate a philosophy that is characterised by the care of virtue, of the educated soul that attains wisdom, which, although projected towards nature and the divine, is not only theoretical, but also practical, achieving 'eupraxia'. It unfolds in the rest of the arts, including politics, and in the company of friends, nourished by the example of Socrates, or the prudent. This 'kalokagathia' is the field of a good life to which philosophy invites, promising happiness.

The aim of this article is to provide a critical appraisal and offer an interpretation of the Rota Vergilii. We therefore review some of its modern commentaries and analyse sections of the text in which the Rota Vergilii is presented, namely John of Garland's Parisiana Poetria. Our conclusion was that the stili of the Rota Vergilii are not sets of subjects and matters, as some modern theorists have claimed, but pertain to the domain of elocution, whereby this medieval concept of "style" is partially in line with the classical theory of the genera dicendi.

Introduction: Motherhood is a time in women's lives when support from the social environment is especially needed to mitigate the demands required by the gestation period and the immediate postpartum period.  Methods: In this multicentre study, the sample includes 1524 pregnant women recruited from the obstetric area of two Spanish tertiary care hospitals. We compare the responses of women who report suicidal ideation with those who report no suicidal ideation. We analyzed their responses to item 9 of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and comparing the differences in the different dimensions of the PHQ-9 (cognitive-affective, psychomotor and pregnancy-related somatic).  Analysing their responses on the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory (PDPI-R), we also studied which components of perceived social support worked as predictors of prenatal suicidal ideation.  Results: Women with suicidal ideation have higher pregnancy-related cognitive-affective, psychomotor and somatic burden compared to those without suicidal ideation. Perceived lack of emotional support from partners or friends and perceived lack of practical support from family are predictors of suicidal ideation.  Introduction: Maternity is a time in women's lives when the support of the social environment is especially needed to mitigate the demands required by the gestation period and the immediate postpartum period.  Methods: In this multicentre study, the sample includes 1524 pregnant women recruited from the obstetric area of two Spanish tertiary care hospitals. Objective. This study aims to analyze to what extent the quality of the romantic attachment, the presence of psychopathological symptoms, and the inter-parental conflicts predict dating conflicts in young adults. Method. The sample comprised 505 individuals, 366 (72.5%) females, aged between 18 and 25 (M = 20.59; SD = 1.78). Results. The results indicate that interparental conflict, psychopathological symptomatology, and ambivalence in romantic attachment negatively predict non-abusive resolution strategies in dating. Abusive coping strategies and dating violence were positively predicted by psychopathological symptoms, inter-parental conflicts, and dating attachment ambivalence. These were also negatively predicted by interpersonal sensitivity and trust in the romantic attachment. Females were associated with non-abusive conflict resolution strategies, whereas males were associated with abusive conflict resolution strategies and violent behaviors.
