The growing publication of historical stereoscopic photographs has called attention to the emergence of varying remediation processes. The article analyses photographs by Marc Ferrez displayed in the exhibition Marc Ferrez: Território e Imagem (2019) and published in its catalog, and in the online collection of the Instituto Moreira Salles. We seek to contribute to a critique of historical photographic objects from a procedural perspective. Keywords: stereoscopy, photography, digital culture, Marc Ferrez.

The article proposes an alternative approach to the paradigm that separates the new urban movements that emerged from the 1970s onwards from the revindications for the right to the city of the previous democratic period. It argues that these are two cycles of struggles in a prolonged process of collective actions about urban claims in different phases of the metropolization process of São Paulo. The article traces Marc Ferrez’s logs, produced in the first decades of the twentieth century, analyzing them as an autobiographical writing and an effort to build memory. The notebooks show a determination to inventory his own work, to register the technological and scientific knowledge that influenced photography at the threshold of modern photographic practice and to produce a “self-writing” that valued the author as an artist, photographer, a modern man and expert in processes and technologies of the photographic image. The article aims to understand particularities of the expansion of the Vila do Vintém favela (Realengo neighborhood) in a context of metropolization of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Based on the analysis of the Political Polices of record group of the Arquivo do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and newspaper reports from the end of 1940’s and the beginning of 1950’s, the article seeks to analyze the political articulation of the residents, identifying that the struggle for permanence and for the right to housing also occurred in favelas in more peripheric areas. The article presents a quantitative analysis of the uses of the categories “urban peripheries” and “favelas” in scholar papers of graduate programs related to the urban studies field. 224 doctoral theses, published between 1987 and 2015, were selected to build a thematic framework and an autorship profile of these productions with the classification and analytical tools of the UrbanData-Brasil catalog. This article shows some possibilities to think about the past of the metropolization process in Brazil, focusing on the period of the construction of public stadiums across the country. Stadiums of “gigantic” dimensions in the state capitals or stadiums of reduced size in smaller cities were built with contributions from the federal government and the state and municipal governments in partnership with contractors. Many of these constructions were investigated and these processes are in the digital archives of the Sistema de Informações do Arquivo Nacional (Sian) [National Archives Information System]. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the urban reforms that took place in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century were portrayed in the newspapers of other Brazilian states. The press speeches about the remodeling of the then federal capital reinforced its representation as a symbol of the country and were essential for the legitimization of the newly established republican regime and for the construction in society’s imaginary that the country had entered a new era of prosperity.Keywords: urban reform, Rio de Janeiro, capitality, press.

This article aims to present and analyze the discursive strategies present in the magazine Alterosa, to understand the construction of the image of the city of Belo Horizonte, between 1939 and 1945, during the Estado Novo period. Through the analisys, it is concluded that the discourses published about the capital of Minas Gerais indicated traces of conformation of a sensibility considered modern. The collector Gilberto Ferrez played an important role in the history of photography in Brazil. His work through books, articles and exhibitions reveals how the effort towards the rediscovery of photography in the country was inextricably linked to the appreciation of his family's legacy. The analysis of a set of sources reveals how this effort contributed to the construction of the recognition of the grandfather – Marc Ferrez – as a key reference character in the history of photography in Brazil, leading at the same time to the appreciation of his own collection. This article analyzes the construction of the Carioca landscape as an urban experience, aesthetic identity, and visual emblem. The visions of nature and the city of Rio de Janeiro projected by the work of Marc Ferrez and its diffusion in analogical and digital media coexist today with other distinctive images of the place that subvert established imaginaries and resize the appropriations of this landscape.
