L’existència de submodels de conjugació amb increments a tots els dialectes i conjugacions del català, així com el nombre migrat de verbs que presenten, en conjunt, les conjugacions ii (batre, témer, poder, dir) i iiia (dormir), fan pensar que tan lícit és proposar subconjugacions regulars de flexió amb increments (velars i palatals), possibles a totes les conjugacions (en línia amb la proposta inicial de Viaplana 1984), com ho és limitar la flexió regular als únics patrons que són realment productius, això és, a la conjugació i (cantar) i, a molta distància, la conjugació iiib (servir) (en línia amb les observacions de Ferrater 1970). No sembla, en canvi, eficaç, ni per qüestions numèriques ni per motius dialectals, mantenir els models de conjugació regular proposats per la gramàtica tradicional (i: cantar; ii: batre o témer; iiia: dormir, iiib: servir). Amb aquests precedents, l’objectiu del present treball és, d’una banda, repassar els motius tradicionals i dialectològics que sostenen encara la classificació verbal habitual i, de l’altra, repensar els models de conjugació regular, tot considerant qüestions pràctiques relacionades amb l’ensenyament de la llengua.

Affectedness is a key property of patient arguments that has been shown to be an important factor for argument selection and case marking. In addition, it has been proven to be relevant for differential object marking (DOM). However, there are only few studies that investigate the influence of affectedness on DOM in Spanish. Further, previous studies have been based on corpus analyses that focus on the diachrony of DOM. This paper assumes a notion of affectedness developed within the framework of force dynamics, according to which an affected argument is defined as the recipient of the force that is specified by the verbal content. Following this definition, we present an empirical investigation based on experimental data from a forced-choice questionnaire involving 326 speakers of Modern European Spanish. The study shows that affectedness has a significant influence on the acceptability of DOM. Furthermore, a close inspection of the experimental data reveals the observation that DOM is not only favoured by the affectedness of the direct object, but also by its agentivity.

This article describes the distribution of Differential Object Marking in Puglia/Apulia (Southeast Italy), where both Upper-Southern (Pugliese/Apulian) and Extreme-Southern (Salentino) Italo-Romance varieties are spoken. This first survey on DOM in Apulia presents evidence from both existing literature and an online questionnaire with native speakers. The latter tests a selection of referents sitting at different levels of the Definiteness Hierarchy, from personal pro- nouns to indefinite nouns, in order to ascertain whether specificity can(not) be considered the ultimate DOM-trigger in these varieties. In this respect, only animate direct object conveying new information are tested, whereas highly specific clitic-doubled topical structures are left for future research. In this first attempt at mapping the fine-grained microvariation of DOM throughout the Apulian peninsula, it appears that its distribution is very limited in Salentino, being restricted to personal pronouns, while Apulian varieties display more extended DOM systems; these may be sensitive to minimally different (lexico-)semantic factors for triggering DOM at the lower levels of the Definiteness Hierarchy.

This article undertakes a descriptive overview of the variation in the distribution and licensing of differential object marking across a wide range of dialects of the south of Italy. It is shown how variation in this area is not random, but follows patterns of structured variation which can be modelled in a scalar fashion in terms of four broad splits based on grammatical person, and on pronominal-nominal, head-phrasal and animacy/specificity oppositions. These four broad dimensions of variation are, in turn, demonstrated to conceal a number of more subtle differences of a microvariational nature. This microvariation, it is suggested, can be read not only horizontally as synchronic variation across the dialects, but also vertically to provide some key insights into the diachronic development of (Italo-)Romance DOM.
