Considering the urbanization process of the Valparaísometropolis, geodemographic growth and mobilitybecome more evident in consolidated areas of citieswith a high density of people. In this sense, a studyis presented on the changes experienced by theconurbations of the metropolitan area of Valparaíso,considering “lifelong” and “recent” interregionalmobility as the focus of the study. For this purpose, the census sources of the years 1982, 1992, 2002and 2017 were used, elaboration of origin-destinationmatrices to then process the information by means ofdemographic statistical methods. The results revealchanges in the communes studied, projecting a newmetropolitan urban spatial configuration that redefinesthe cities, producing spatial asymmetries in theoccupation and use of land, economic activities andaccess to services.

The purpose of this article is to explain and analyzethe implementation of the housing policy through thefulfillment of the objectives of the housing program“Ciudad Bicentenario” in the first stage 2000-2009through the relationship of the political decision andthe actions of actors (public and private). Only thepublic policy phase referring to the implementation inthe first administrative stage (2000-2009) was analyzedbecause in this period there were asymmetriesbetween the inputs and outputs around the analyticalfield of the right to the city and the social issue. Inorder to have a scalar analysis, mapping of the actors;and documentary analysis, it was decided to designa qualitative methodology based on the Glaser &Strauss theory in two stages; the first with documentaryanalysis techniques; and the second with techniquessuch as semi-structured interviews, non-participantobservations and photographic analysis. Thus, asa brief conclusion, the conflictive and asymmetricalrelationships that arose from the implementation of thehousing policy were identified, determining that theless decision-making relationship existed between thepublic executors with the collective action, the greaterthe implementation gap existed.

The Royal Mills in Chimbacalle are part of Quito’sbuilt heritage whose degradation and deteriorationrepresent a problem in the city, in the landscape and inthe environment. Currently, the development of the sitewhere they are located is being promoted, however, the conflicts of interest between power groups have notallowed the improvements to the mills to be carried out.The intervention of a building of these characteristicsinvites reflection on architectural production, withrespect to understanding the scope of projectapproaches such as demolition, intervention, andarchitectural recovery of Los Molinos Royal buildingin order to promote the development of certain urbanvoids of the city that have been forgotten and thathave the potential characteristics to activate the social, cultural and economic dynamics of the environment. The Royal Mills are analyzed from various disciplinaryaspects and a comparative analysis is carried outbetween similar projects at a national and internationallevel to generate a debate around the intervention or

Crisis spaces or crisis of space? Our current era is strongly characterized by crises of significant gravity and urgency. Deep economic and political crises, pandemic wars, and social upheavals all have a direct impact on the wellbeing of people in their own homes as well as on the urban and territorial scales. A small sample of the numerous effects of these events includes changes in human mobility, the food system, labor market accessibility, and access to decent housing. The current issues display the urban and architectural context and raise concerns about the sociospatial, aesthetic, and technical approaches to take for defining public and private spaces. This issue calls for a reflection on the new or renewed frontiers of (i) the conceptualized, designed, and calculated spaces and buildings that reflect the complexity of contemporary living; (ii) the proposals for the management and planning of territory and cities focused on sustainability and resilience; and, finally, (iii) the cultural scenarios that depict the material and immaterial heritage of our contexts, essential components for bolstering local identity in these times.

The exhibition Architecture Without Architects opened in 1964 at the Museum ofModern Art of New York. Comparing the curatorial strategy carried out by the curator, BernardRudofsky, to previous proposals presented in the architecture department of the institutionreveals AWA as an unprecedented milestone, not only for showing a new way of understandingarchitecture, but also for the exclusive use of photographic materials, which created a dialecticstructure through the postproduction process, reusing images of multiple origins. Rudofsky’sproposal resulted in an exhibition design of cartographic form, related to Atlas Mnemosyne, getting away from traditional, linear and chronological ways to expand the field of vision in favor of a transversal, simultaneous reading, making AWA a reference point in the world ofarchitectural exhibitions of the time and opening new ways in architectural communication.

From the great housing shortage that emerged in the United Kingdom after the Second World War, a new construction system will facilitate the expansion of an architectural type characterized by its configuration through linear blocks connected by bridges, as the extension of its elevated levels. Living in the streets in the sky breaks into the housing panorama as the solution of the future, capable of combining the experiential dynamics of the Garden City with the high density. However, various construction, design and demographic problems will lead to the collapse of the cohabitation in these systematized chains, which will arouse their early demolition or their immersion in elaborate rehabilitation processes. Its greatest virtue will turn, over time, into its greatest fragility.

As the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk points out, distrust in the environment that surrounds us, together with the development of air control and comfort technologies, has led us to an increasing process of “interiorization” of architectural space. Our globalized world has thus accustomed us to breathe a designed and synthesized air, enveloping us in a predetermined comforting atmosphere, perfectly developed and “scented”, in order to create new and exciting effects on users-spectators-buyers. This interior is, in itself, a great climatic machine; that is, a “great sculpture of air” that its inhabitants pass through as a “breathable installation”. Air that can be manipulated, controlled (almost in laboratory conditions) and stored optimally. In this regard, several relevant cases will be presented here as they will be able to manipulate the many atmospheric variables, vectors, energies, gradients, etc. at the service of new interiors: sensorially suggestive and geographically displaced.

In the period between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s, Juan Daniel Fullaondo carried out a fruitful professional activityin the Basque Country, a stage in which he reached his architectural maturity while affirming himself as one of the mainhistoriographic critics of the second half of the 20th century. It is precisely this period that is included in the exhibitionentitled Juan Daniel Fullaondo 1964-1978. Ten works + a vision of the Basque Country inaugurated in November 2021in Bilbao, the first exhibition to be held on the architect from Bilbao his death in 1994.This text seeks to share and expand the material researched for the exhibition, reviewing mainly the architecturalproduction developed in those years. A period that fully coincides with the crucial work of architecture and art divulgationled by the architect through the magazine Nueva Forma.

Modernity brought new technical solutions for more efficient space conditioning, improving health and comfort conditions dramatically. As safety and other building codes grew imposingly over the second half of the twentieth century, the incorporation of mechanical systems increased exponentially. However, the growth of mechanical systems in contemporary architectural production often restrains architectural techniques based on local traditionally passive solutions, producing less sustainable, and more expensive spaces. Architects can work on a fully contemporary and sustainable production without the often abusive and blind approach to technology. In this essay, we will propose to reverse part of the design sequence, insisting on a more contextual process based on the relevance of historically valuable passive systems, to finally propose a focus on the design of border conditions as a critical basis for efficiency control, concluding with the consideration of material enclosures as mediating devices for energetic efficiency, and specifically, enclosing mass.

Marine renewable energies, recently implemented, propose models of spatial organization that are derived from the same strategies that have spread on land throughout many territories. The uniqueness of the marine environment, on the other hand, induces the establishment of relationships between energy infrastructures and the landscape that must be studied specifically. Through the study of references, projects and implementation strategies, we can identify four main topics for reflection: networks, spatial patterns, perception and visibility and marine architectures. From a cross-cutting and multidisciplinary perspective, we can rethink maritime planning, integration into the seascape and the land-sea socio-cultural relationship in such a way that the global project of marine energy infrastructure can be enriched and, as a consequence, the way of approaching the occupation of maritime space in the coming decades.
