Resumen
Few are the people that Don Ricardo Palma and his first-born Clemente considered as true friends, among them are Luis Benjamín Cisneros and his son Luis Fernán; brothers and children of both characters will also join this fellowship over the years. The actions, attitudes, gestures, and considerations that are reciprocally exchanged by those who consider themselves true friends have particular traits or characteristics which, according to Aristotle, are duration or transcendence in time, loyalty, the shared search for good, and happiness. Could these Aristotelian traits or characteristics be found in the relationship between the Palma and the Cisneros? Discovering this is the purpose that animates the present investigation that wishes to be a contribution to the better knowledge of the characters studied here, and whose influence is undeniable in the history, literature, and Peruvian journalism of the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the twentieth century.
Keywords: Ricardo Palma, Clemente Palma, Luis Benjamín Cisneros, Luis Fernán Cisneros, Peruvian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Resumen
This article will examine “Sistema decimal entre los antiguos peruanos” by Ricardo Palma. Palma’s essay argues that the Inkas used the decimal system by departing from a philological analysis of Ollantay and the Royal Commentaries of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. It will consider why this piece is an essay and not a tradición by comparing its constituent elements with the characteristics of the essay as Gómez Martínez theorizes them, including discursivity, lack of a rigid structure, inciting reflection, digression, and vagueness in quoting practices. If Palma does a philological study of Ollantay and the Royal Commentaries, the present article will complete a philological study of Palma’s “Sistema decimal”.
Keywords: Ricardo Palma, “Sistema decimal”, essay, discursivity, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Ollantay, Peruvian literature.

Resumen
The letters between Ricardo Palma and Rafael Altamira, some of them published in the General Epistolary of the traditionist by the Ricardo Palma University, and others in the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library (the last one coming from the Altamira legacy deposited in the Secondary Education Institute Jorge Juan de Alicante) are a first-rate source for research on cultural relations between the two intellectuals. This relationship is paradigmatic of the reestablishment of the bridges of communication brought about by the events of ‘98, in the context of the controversy between Latins and Anglo-Saxons that marked the inter-century period. The letters analyzed in this paper, which cover the period from 1895 to 1910, open a new angle for the analysis of this crucial period in the history of cultural relations between Spain and Latin America since the beginning of the 20th century.
Keywords: Ricardo Palma, Rafael Altamira, letters, intellectual and cultural affinity.

Resumen
Ricardo Palma is probably one of the most controversial Peruvian intellectuals of his time and probably also one of the most discussed writers since his first « Tradiciones» that broke with the scheme of the known literary genres were made known. His origins have been appreciated in different ways by the critics of his time and even more so by later critics based on ideological rather than literary considerations. The present article reveals the content of the unprejudiced readings of Ricardo Palma’s work made by the author in recent years and consigned in the recently published book Ricardo Palma Caballero en su burro. Negritude, dissidence and utopia. It is a book where it is attempted to explain from a meticulous and deep examination of the literary work of the Patriarch of the Peruvian Letters, of his abundant correspondence and of his active participation in the political contest, the committed content of his life and work with his dissimulated Afro-descendant origins, taking into account the racist environment of the time in which he had to live and write.
Keywords: Traditions, negritude, dissidence, utopia, racism, identity, colonialism, slavery, Americanity, asnography.
