Ricardo Palma is the creator of the literary genre known as Las Tradiciones, which are short stories with the purpose of spreading a Smiling History of Peru from the world of the Incas to the republican society. Although he did not develop it extensively, he has also left us satirical epigrams dedicated to parliamentarians and government authorities of the country. In fact, the importance of this creation was made known by our teacher Alberto Tauro del Pino with a prologue to this literary creation, which we support with a new reading of the paper mentioned. The present article on an unpublished subject in the historiography palmista seeks to expose the work of our distinguished traditionalist during the visit to our capital made by Don Carlos de Borbon, Carlist pretender to the crown of his elders with the numeral VII. To do so, we will previously expose the knowledge of this dynastic claim in the press of Lima, to then approach the visit itself and the performance that interests us. The article reflects on the inconsistencies that Ricardo Palma had to overcome, essentially the internal ones in his beginnings, and then makes general mention of the contradictions he had to face with the detractors of the community, in his adulthood. The contradictions, in this case, are those of a literary and cultural nature, affecting literary creation and historical research, as essential elements for the writing of traditions. In this article, we discuss some ideas about the evolution of these two centuries of our independence and how, since there have been no changes in substance, the insurgent and libertarian figure of Palma grows and becomes bicentennial. We put the weight on some traditions that reflect the incidences of episodes previous to our independence between 1821 and 1824. The figure of Ricardo Palma has always aroused much interest both as creator of the masterpiece, Tradiciones peruanas which collects traditions, customs, pieces of history from every period of the country, the Inca Empire, the Colony, the Independence and the Republic, as well as the opponent of Manuel González Prada, in order to mention only a few perspectives. And on the basis of the last one, we come to the topic of the unfair annexation of the traditionist to colonialism and the discovery of the critical tone towards politics, Peruvian society and the church. These three great poles, considered as an extension of the colonial system, receive from Ricardo Palma a critical and ironic look and a comparison with what happened in the past in an attempt to offer Peruvians a better future without repeating mistakes. En este artículo se analizará la práctica de la apuesta como juego de azar, entre los oficiales de los ejércitos en beligerancia por la guerra de la Independencia, presentada literariamente mediante cartas. Con ese argumento Ricardo Palma ha compuesto una tradición de estructura textual atípica en relación a su forma convencional representativa. Desde el punto de vista del Derecho, nos da la oportunidad de estudiarla como un caso actual, identificándolo y explicándola en tanto un contrato aleatorio regido por el Derecho Civil regulado por el Código Civil de 1984.

En 1908, el periodista, crítico de arte y empresario de cine Federico Larrañaga entrevistó a Ricardo Palma, quien a sus setenta y cinco añosseguía al frente de la Biblioteca Nacional, aunque cada vez más alejado de la actividad literaria por los achaques propios de la ancianidad. El original reportaje incidió en algunos aspectos de la vida íntima o doméstica de don Ricardo, entonces y hoy poco conocidos, y salió publicado con fotografías en la fugaz revista Siluetas.

Este artículo se inicia señalando a Palma como precursor de la tauromaquia y la gallística; luego analiza las corridas de toros a partir de su analogía con el proceso de la escritura, tomando en cuenta el ritmo, la lucha de contrarios, el silencio y el misterio. En esa misma línea, se ofrecen ejemplos relativos a las peleas de gallos. Se destacan algunos libros referidos a esta afición y la presencia de Palma como antecedente del conocido relato de Valdelomar.

Palma fue, en su tiempo, importante testigo de episodios que afectaron la vida nacional. De joven pudo escapar de la muerte al ser enviado a entregar una carta en medio del Combate del 2 de mayo en donde se rechazaba el intento de ser nuevamente colonizados. Posteriormente, ya mayor, presenció la ocupación y saqueo durante la Guerra del Pacífico. Luego fue nombrado director de la Biblioteca Nacional, desde donde buscó remontar la lamentable situación y emprendió una ardua labor para recolectar libros que le valieron el calificativo del “bibliotecario mendigo”.

En este artículo, a partir de cartas personales, el autor recorre las trayectorias de Ricardo Palma y Francisco García Calderón Landa, ambospersonajes fundamentales de la vida cultural y política de la historia del Perú. En ellas encuentra las desavenencias que los separaron, pero también los espacios de cultura que compartieron.
