The model 1859 clothes backpack was used to carry soldier's spare clothing and necessaries. It was strictly made according to a pattern and was constructed in a box shape from leather and canvas, painted black on the exterior. An example of this model, which belongs to the Lisbon Military Museum collection (MML02048), was removed from the storage in 2016 in order to be inventoried. It was subsequently restored within the curricular unit “conservation and restoration project” of the Conservation and Restoration Bachelor so it could be placed on permanent exhibition. This object was likely used in campaign in Mozambique in 1894-95 by the bugler António Moura, taking part on the combat of Marracuene. Areas of deterioration, such as f laking paint and canvas losses, were caused mainly by storage conditions and improper care over the course of more than a century. The treatment was guided towards its ideal state, enhancing mostly historical and aesthetical values which were obtained through investigation.    Received: 2018-12-9Revised: 2019-9-6Accepted: 2020-5-28Online: 2020-7-31Publication: 2020-7-31

Perforated cardboard is a rigid material widely used during the second half of the 19th century as an embroidery support, but very little-known today. Intervention cases are rare, and so an intervention on a poor condition 1879 glass beads embroidered specimen is presented here. The intervention was a complex task, mainly due to the fragility of the object and the existence of different materials linked to each other, that did not allow the execution of treatments to which they are usually subjected when isolated. The most intricate operation was the simultaneous action of micro-consolidation and micro-infill. These involved the insertion of Japanese paper fibres and 4 % Tylose MH300 between the perforated paper layers, and the insertion of Japanese paper strips between the embroidery lines. For the embroidery housing, it was necessary simultaneously to avoid the most unfavourable conditions for both the preservation of the glass and the paper.   Received: 2018-12-9Revised: 2019-1-28Accepted: 2019-2-13Online: 2019-3-7Publication: 2020-7-31

In 2013 new improvements took place at the storage areas of the national palaces of Pena, Queluz and Sintra administrated by Parques de Sintra–Monte da Lua. The initial goal was to achieve a better use of the little space available by building custom made polypropylene boxes so stacking up could be done safely. We tried to develop a system that was simple and easily repeatable so that identical materials, methods and organization principles could be followed in storage areas in spite of the different characteristics of existing objects. This paper share practical aspects that were developed while searching for an optimal solution to adequately cushion and box museum objects. The ongoing assessment, carried out according to the agents of deterioration, triggered significant changes to the initial methodology. Results of the evaluation of the use of boxes to block or mitigate some agents of deterioration and their contribution to preventive conservation are presented. How these improvements reflected in collection management is also discussed.   Received:2018-11-30Revised:2019-5-6Accepted:2019-6-7Online:2020-3-17Publication:2020-7-31

In the last quarter of the past century and at the beginning of 21st century, several documents were produced by institutions in the preservation of heritage area, concerning preventive conservation. There are also several examples of national legislation with guidelines about preventive conservation – the law for Museums n.º 47/2004, the law n.º 3/2006 related with the accreditation of Museums and the law n.º 16/93, that sets the national policies for Portuguese archives. As a result of a professional experience of 13 years in the area with the development of several preventive conservation plans in the last eight years, the author makes a reflection on their practical application. Throughout the paper the results of a survey and the reflections about the integration of the plans in the management models are presented, as well as their applicability and compliance with the legislation associated.   Received: 2018-11-28Revised: 2019-8-7Accepted: 2020-5-28Online: 2020-7-31Publication: 2020-7-31

As far as I know, this is the first volume dedicated to scientific collections in a conservation journal, something I have to thank to the previous director of Conservar Património, António João Cruz, and the current director, Elin Figueiredo. The fact that there are only four articles does not mean that the problem is uncommon or uninteresting, but only that we are in its infancy. I hope that these four articles will open up new perspectives of conservation research or at least awaken the curiosity of conservator-restorers, especially those currently in training.   Online: 2020-3-13Publication: 2020-3-13

Mould growth on the inner surfaces of building elements is a common pathology found in buildings, resulting not only in the early degradation of the materials but also in the deterioration of the indoor environment. On the other hand, building renovation provides an exceptional opportunity to improve the quality of life of its users. Within this scope it is therefore relevant to understand the effect that different painting solutions may have on mould growth. This work evaluated the mould growth in four kinds of substrates, with different painting systems. The selected case studies were: two “tabique” walls (constructive solution with strong implantation in the built heritage), one with lime mortar and another with lime and cement mortar; and two gypsum plasterboards (a constructive solution that is widely applied in building renovation), a normal and a water repellent. To evaluate the mould growth, two methodologies were adopted: counting the number of colony forming units (CFU) in six sampling periods; and visual inspection through photographic recording, including the quantification of the percentage of "dark pixels". At the end of the test it was established that plasterboard was more favourable to mould growth when compared to “tabique” walls. Moreover, the roughness of the substrates and the sampling location had also significant impact on the results.   Received: 2019-2-13Revised: 2019-12-6Accepted: 2020-1-24Online: 2020-5-28Publication: 2020-11-27

Three surveys on the occurrence of foxing stains were carried out on papers dating from 1560 to 1975 in three Portuguese collections. Foxed papers were found to be more intensely and intrusively stained in certain time periods of each collection. Based on historical data and the professional paper conservation expertise, the authors linked the increased occurrence of foxing stains in certain time periods to the new papermaking processes and materials, which began to be introduced in the late 18th century, and in particular to a synergistic effect between three factors: the use of deficient gelatine sizing which began to present a poorer quality and homogeneity, the presence of iron-containing impurities throughout the paper leaf and a distinct absorbency of moisture. Observing batches of morphologically similar papers by using photographic imaging with different types of light sources and incidences, the authors verified that similar papers present similar foxing stains.   Received: 2019-7-20Revised: 2019-11-19Accepted: 2019-11-27Online: 2020-5-4Publication: 2020-11-27

The plastic objects from our cultural heritage are material testimonies of our history, technology and industry. Still, in Portugal, there is no museum of plastics, and the collections are spread through private collectors and industries. The research project, "The Triumph of Bakelite – Contributions to a History of Plastics in Portugal", aims at creating this museum. To this end, the research work gave rise to the exhibition, "Plasticity – A History of Plastics in Portugal", in Museu de Leiria in 2019. This study focuses on the contribution of conservation science for the writing of this history and preparation of ca. 150 historical plastic objects for display. Bakelite, melamine, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and plasticized polyvinyl chloride are just a few examples of the polymers identified by infrared spectroscopy. This identification was crucial to tell the history of the plastics industry in Portugal. Both the spectra and characteristic absorption bands of each polymer are presented.   Received: 2019-6-17Revised: 2019-11-18Accepted: 2020-1-6Online: 2020-5-13Publication: 2020-11-27

The conservation of modern metals–such as aluminium, stainless, and weathering steels–used as materials of contemporary works of art is a major challenge for conservators and curators. The recent application of these metals, in use since the beginning of the nineteenth century, makes for the lack of conservative measurements and conservation programs on such materials. In order to achieve this, a detailed identification, characterisation of the fabrication techniques, and the study of these metals’ deterioration is required. In her book, Virginia Costa embraces the hard challenge of bridging this gap.   Received: 2019-8-7Accepted: 2019-8-8Online: 2020-4-15Publication: 2020-11-27
