In her Philosophical Letters, Margaret Cavendish strongly rejects the belief in witchcraft, arguing that it would be foolish to attribute all unusual natural effects to the intervention of immaterial entities like the devil. Due to her materialistic stance, she asserts that the devil cannot influence nature. However, when there is no identifiable natural cause for a phenomenon, it is ascribed to a devilish influence. My hypothesis is that Cavendish not only rejects witchcraft because of her materialistic stance but also provides an alternative explanation for such phenomena based on two fundamental cornerstones of her philosophy: 1) an ordered but, at times, irregular universe, and 2) limited human knowledge.

In this work I argue for the importance of considering the role of implicit norms in practices within a notion of scientific objectivity. I begin by presenting the traditional notion of objectivity according to which science is objective insofar as it leads us to absolute representations of the world as it is “independent of our minds.” I then discuss the limitations of this view and introduce dialectical objectivity as an alternative. Dialectical objectivity is a matter of degree associated with the evolution of systems of commitments: a system is more objective the closer it is to reflective equilibrium. This alternative is promising; however, it leaves the role of implicit norms in practices uncertain. To strengthen it, I propose expanding the notion of reflective equilibrium to account for implicit norms and thereby better manage the biases associated with such norms.

It is very likely that Borges would have liked, for different reasons, to converse with some of the early philosophers, especially with Zeno of Elea and Plato. In the case of Zeno, the rebutter of “real reality” which relies on space and time, Borges found a true “fellow traveler”, and devoted two articles of Discusión to his paradoxes. The case of Plato is different, since he used him as an example of his own philosophical “evolution”, as he went from a merciless criticism of his theory of Ideas in Historia de la eternidad, where they are presented as “museum pieces”, to a true praise of their dynamic and vital character in the second edition of the same work, thirty years later.

I explore the notion of prudence (Klugheit) as part of Kantian pedagogy. Prudence is the formative development of the pragmatic predisposition, and it is necessary for cosmopolitanism and happiness. I argue that there is a paradoxical tension within prudence: the realization of cosmopolitan social conditions hinders the attainment of individual happiness. I borrow Friedrich Schlegel’s conception of irony in order to make sense of this paradoxical tension in Kant’s pedagogical practice and I show that the concept of “unsociable sociability” supports this ironic interpretation

According to Breitenbach, the importance that Kant attaches to teleology in the study of organic nature is not only compatible with contemporary epistemological positions, but also represents progress within the framework of the ongoing debate on the topic. This is because Kant proposes a general teleological conception of nature according to which considering something as organic already means considering it teleologically. Although I agree that the analysis that Kant proposes is relevant to the contemporary discussion about the issue, I try to show that, from his point of view, the identification and experience of the organic as such does not suppose a teleological perspective, but the latter occurs when we want to account for certain characteristics of organisms that, otherwise, would be hardly intelligible.

In this article I examine the influence of Cicero’s treatise De officiis in eighteenth-century discussions on the foundations of morals, particularly in the epistolary exchanges between Hume and Hutcheson, and Kant and Garve. I suggest that, if we subscribe today’s widely accepted view that knowledge is historically and socially constructed, and power relations play an essential role in it, we should pay special attention to these discussions to appreciate how Hume and Kant’s theories on morals retrieved various aspects of Cicero’s De officiis both to resist and negotiate the dictates of ecclesiastic and academic institutions in the eighteenth-century and, in this way, to bring the Enlightenment to a wider public.
