The link between climate change and catastrophes is increasingly close. This paper analyzes these dependencies to learn how certain natural phenomena cause catastrophes and how certain anthropic circumstances try to avoid them or, on the contrary, only manage to cause them. Random samples have been taken between 2019, 2020 and 2021 to record relevant events such as climate summits, climate action weeks or particular extreme weather events. In the search, the filters “climate change”, “catastrophe” and “disaster” were used in headlines and in the news. The main communication media (agencies, press, radio and television) were selected according to their different modalities (digital and non-digital). The results confirmed that the dependence between climate change and catastrophes is very close, but this does not mean that this relationship is explained by journalists, nor sufficiently understood by readers.

This research analyses the network of Twitter user interactions during the 26th UN Climate Change conference of Parties (COP26), hosted in Glasgow on 31st October to 13th November. The purpose of this paper is to measure its main features by identifying key players in the conversation and their main themes, taking account of possible correlations between the sentiment and objectivity of messages, and their level of engagement. To this effect, a social network analysis methodology was developed in relation to the configuration of the network. Moreover, we used a quantitative approach to detect possible correlations. Results showed a very small, centralised network where key players are mainly activists over political leaders or scientists. Finally, these results also showed relatively neutral and objective messages, where the engagement of tweets is stronger when messages are more objective and positive.

Analyzing television discourse during 2021 through a statistical sample of records extracted from TV networks, the configuration that, in the pandemic, adjusted the dialectical mediation between television communication and cognitive capital available for resilience to Climate Change is revealed. This study originates from reports that in collaboration with ECODES and funding from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, carried out by the Media Communication Observatory on Climate Change at its headquarters of the MDCS Research Group of the UCM. The analysis revealed how the causes, impacts, mitigation, and adaptation projects to the effects of climate change were communicated, and the identity of those who speak and/or are referred to. The discursive hegemony of mediators (journalists) and politicians is confirmed, to the detriment of scientists, and improved communication for resilience to climate change is promoted.

At a time when data confirms that climate change is a reality, researching communication around this phenomenon is essential. Moreover, when its consequences affect health, studying this in the communication of climate change is necessary. This research seeks to identify the importance of communication in adaptation to climate change and media coverage on communication of climate change and its effects on health. For this, a quantitative and qualitative approach has been used, using a survey and a focus group. Among the results, the people surveyed say that the media focus their information on the consequences and that the media do not promote quality information, but instead become a source of bad news. Meanwhile, the focus group points out that there is a growing tendency to include this topic within solutions journalism.

This article aims to (re) think the processes of production, circulation and reception of news content as a critical resource in the construction of gender and sexuality identities. We analyzed three news as object of study, through the lens of the Critical Feminist Discourse Analysis (Lazar, 2007), as well as the readings and discussions about these texts collected during the Think tank held at the “International Colloquium and Summer School Gender, Communication and Activisms”, at the University of Coimbra. This is an exploratory research and uses the deconstruction of news as a strategy to reflect on the naturalization of gender and sexuality stereotypes present in journalistic publications.

For a few decades now, the general finding of the decline of “humanistic” areas of knowledge in most countries has been recurrent, while guided teaching and research around disciplines understood as more “scientific”—particularly those grouped in the STEM area and those related to Health and Biomedicine— have become increasingly popular. The widespread perception of the low utility and social application of humanistic knowledge, as well as its lack of scientific rigor, is not only common among citizens but also very prevalent among the research community, especially in the design of institutional policies for the social promotion of knowledge and scientific culture. In this study, we analyze the communicative strategy of research promotion at SINC news agency, as a sample of the institutional policies that are promoted by the Spanish public institutions in relation to the Humanities and Social Sciences areas. To this end, we use a methodological strategy that combines the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contents understood as “humanistic” published in SINC and compare it with a sample of those perceived as more “scientific.” The results of the analysis confirm the low institutional interest in the promotion of “humanistic” knowledge by the SINC news agency of the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation (FECYT).

It’s an analysis of the news published in the front pages of the newspapers El Impulso and el Correo del Orinoco on the process of convocation and elections to the National Constituent Assembly in 2017 in Venezuela. Headlines and leads are compared from which five categories and eleven subcategories emerged, based on the theories of the personification of politics, the agenda setting, the political agenda, and post-truth. Amid the polarization and violence in the streets, Correo, controlled by the government of Nicolás Maduro, was the one that most appealed to the emotions of its audience, while the political personification around the figure of the late Hugo Chávez in official media did not have the intensity of previous years. El Impulso dedicated more space to the confrontation of the Constituent process than Correo del Orinoco.

The article proposes an analysis of the treatment given by the digital media to women political leaders with the aim of identifying the polarity (positive, neutral or negative) of the information published about them. The research focuses on the cases of Ada Colau and Inés Arrimadas. Therefore, the article develops a computerised sentiment analysis of the information published in the newspapers El País and ABC, during the month of November 2019. The analysis of the 229 journalistic pieces that mentioned the two political leaders shows that the polarity is predominantly neutral. However, the journalistic genre of opinion determines the media tone which is used in the representation of the female politicians. Likewise, it can be observed a significant relationship of affinity or antipathy of the media with the ideology of the women politicians analysed.
