Development has been a dominant trope of global political and economic life since the 1950s. As such it has been inevitably linked to some of the most important social processes of this era: colonialism, globalization, postcolonialism, global ecological crisis, the rise of environmentalism, and more. Consolidation of the contemporary consumer society came, hand in hand, with the certainty that it sustained a way of life that, like collateral damage, included a global ecological crisis. From many parts of the world new voices raised concerns about the costs of globalization and proposed alternatives and solutions; thus, modern eco-criticism was born. This article analyzes the historical process of emergence of eco-critical concepts as well as appropriation, redefinition, and use of these concepts by politicians and economists. Specifically, we reflect on how “development” and “growth” under heavy criticism during the 70s were gradually transformed into “sustainable development” first, and, as this conversion was still raising significant disapproval, to “sustainability” later. Adoption of these new ideological frameworks aimed at legitimizing development allowed Western societies to ignore more critical approaches such us “zero growth” or “degrowth”.

Resumen
This article analyzes and compares the coverage provided by two prominent newspapers on two corruption cases, one in Portugal (the Freeport case in Diário de Notícias) and one in Spain (the Palma Arena case in El País). The goal is to know the parameters of newsworthiness of political corruption and to ensure that its coverage is consistent with the principles of relevance, visibility and framing as they relate to customization and sensationalism of political news. For this study we rely on the principles of “agenda setting” and “priming”. And, we apply the methodology of content analysis to understand the intent of what the media convey to the public. The results show that political corruption assumes a very high media visibility in both newspapers, though it is especially critical in the newspaper El País and more moderate in Diário de Notícias.

Resumen
Andalusia in e-Equality was one of the projects included within the EQUAL Community Initiative. These projects, through networking of professionals who plan, develop, and evaluate them, sought to promote social innovation, either in the projects’ content or in their processes. Networking, a transnational vision of Europe, and promotion of the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) were key points around which actions were developed to promote a common culture where equality was the modus operandi of the project. In this paper, we present the development and implementation of a methodology for analyzing the content of messages in online discussions that developed in the forums included in the website of the project. The descriptive and qualitative content analysis is performed using an interpretive approach based on a framework of symbolic interactionism and phenomenology. It shows, through practical experience of the Andalucía e-Equal project, the opportunity of using forums as optimal resources for values education. Also tested were variables on the internalization of values and meanings, facilitators for building a culture and a critical view in the analysis of inequality.

Resumen
The communication model of football club Barcelona has moved from the 1980s, when football clubs in Spain began to professionalize the management of information, until today when it has integrated the building of its brand with the dissemination strategy aimed at its target audiences. For this work, we opted for a qualitative methodology that included in-depth interviews and a secondary empirical examination of literature and newspaper sources. The results show that the Catalan club has gone from a direct relationship with journalists as a channel to transmit its image to using a multimedia platform of its own to create and manage its information. We conclude that the objective of this model is to reduce the club’s reliance on information published by the media.

Resumen
This article studies the relationship between television- and communication-based education and the formation of values. The research analyzes the importance of educommunication, or education via the communication media, by comparing two real educommunicative experiences: one in a local indigenous community in the state of Yucatan (Mexico), and the other in a group of secondary education students in Cordoba (Spain). By applying the qualitative survey method, one will be able to measure the importance of the educommunicative model in classroom training centers, with the goal of teaching communication in the classroom as a powerful factor of social and cultural change. Results demonstrate that the participation of audiences in design and construction of television content multiplies the effectiveness of educommunication in values education and formation of a critical spirit.

Resumen
This article contributes to the understanding of modern society and the dynamics of technological activism undertaken from and on the internet. The new forms of collective action are based on an open, free and decentralized internet. However, fundamental rights such as privacy and intimacy or freedom of expression and the free flow of ideas are encountering some obstacles in the digital medium. The deep web is presented as the ideal environment where citizens born of the hacker era and under the influence of free culture are organized in hacktivist groups and exert pressure on the economic and political powers. The methodology for this study includes a bibliographical review, fieldwork and participant observation in the environments studied. The results confirm that technological activism is imposing civic and political value of software as a key element in social construction. Technological activist groups such as Anonymous are gaining importance and prominence in the social, political and economic future.

Resumen
Urban entrepreneurialism constitutes a key process in current urban transformations. By these means, local authorities encourage investments of private capital in the neoliberal context. The present work links this concept with the process of gentrification and applies both of them to recent transformations in the central area of Mexico City. It relies on a case study, backed up by extensive field work, in which surveys of land uses and qualitative interviews are combined with diverse secondary sources. Current transformations in the central district show distinct characteristics of urban entrepreneurialism, such as the stimulation of private investment as the main factor in urban requalification.

Resumen
Based on an analysis of the debate on the state of the nation in 2013 in Spain, this article analyzes the impact of social networks on political debate. The predominant content in conversations on Twitter during the week in which the debate takes place (Monday 18 February to Sunday 24 February) are defined, and the degree of interest of users with regard to other matters is compared. Then, the size and scope of the discussion in this social network is examined. User ratings of the government are analyzed, as are reactions to the evaluation of the prime minister on the situation and the meaning of user messages to the opposition leader. The study also explores the tone of the messages and checks to see if the debate on Twitter revolves around the same issues and problems that citizens consider most relevant according to data provided by the Center for Sociological Research. The results contribute to a better understanding of the impact of Twitter on public opinion.
