Resumen
The purpose of this article is to study the greeting formulae that are recorded at different times in the history of the Spanish language; understood as discursive units, typical of the expressive speech act, these formulas serve to open the communicative channel of emerging social relations. From a usage-based approach and through a systematic search in electronic corpora (CORDE, BREPOLIS, eMGH), the study delves into 1) the paradigmatic origin of each of the formulae, 2) the sociopragmatic factors that discriminate its use and 3) its sociocultural distribution in different periods in the history of the Spanish language.

This paper describes some syntactic-semantic characteristics and the diachronic variation of constructions with cuyo, present in archival documents from the late 18th and 19th centuries in Uruguayan Spanish, extracted from CORDIAM. The analysis presents constructions that differentiate possessive and non-possessive uses, in which cuyo establishes relations with or without syntactic dependence with the preceding segment, always maintaining its deictic value, with values closer to demonstratives in some cases. Over time, there is a lower frequency of use and less syntactic variation: the canonical use (a relative possessive determiner in a noun phrase) gains ground at the expense of non‑canonical constructions, some of which even disappear.

By comparing La gitanilla and La fuerza de la sangre (Cervantes, Exemplary Novels, 1613) with the British tragicomedy The Spanish Gypsy (T. Middleton, W. Rowley, T. Dekker and J. Ford, 1623), this article hopes to demonstrate that certain differences between the British play and the Spanish plays on which it is based are the result of the acclimatization of stories written by Cervantes in the post-Tridentine Spain of Philip III, to the sociopolitical and ideological context of the British Protestant reign of James I. This is evident, for example, in the suppression of Leocadia’s pregnancy (La fuerza de la sangre) and the different image that is offered of the Gypsies (La gitanilla).

The purpose of this article is to elucidate the interpretative strategies employed by Faria e Sousa in his commentary on Camões’s Rimas varias. In his commentary he follows Herrera while censoring him, and also engages in the controversy surrounding Góngora, a poet whose major poems he condemns. His text, as will be seen, revives an exegetical tradition whose lesson and methods he intends to emulate. For him, Garcilaso prepared the advent of Camões, a figure who is seen as enthroned in timeless splendour. Such heights remain out of the reach of Góngora, who is barely present in censures tempered with praise. In his dialogue with previous controversies, Faria e Sousa reaffirms the value of his own critical and intellectual work.
