The Farming in the Domain of Escornalbou, Archdiocese of Tarragona (12th-15th centuries)

This article is an approach to the livestock farming activities in the domain of Escornalbou (Catalonia, in the Baix Camp shire and municipality of Riudecanyes) during the late medieval centuries. After recounting the few known history and particularities of the Augustinian canons of the barony of Escornalbou, the lords of the place, the main features of the livestock explotation are narrated: The protections granted by the emprius (rights of use), the vicinity of the city of Tarragona, credits to the livestock purchasing operations, and the animal custody and care infrastructures as well. Animals present in the documents are also explained and the characteristics of their explotation. The canons of Escornalbou did not have a particular interest in the livestock economy, but their barony’s men considered it a serious business to be exploited with the only limit of their financial capacities.

Mammon at the Frontier: Greed and Avarice in the Castilian Chronicles about the War of Granada

Greed and Avarice represents a recurring topic in the castilian chronicles, specially in the late medieval cycle about the Catholic Monarchs and the War of Granada (1482-1492). A detailed analysis of this set of chronicles reveals the double standards of the authors and, above all, the arbitrary use of the accusation of greed, a resource that is only used to highlight the vileness of certain historical figures and, in another cases, when it is necessary to shore up the tone providentialist of the story associating the setbacks of war to the sins of the combatants.
