This qualitative and theoretical study aims to discuss the possible consequences of a National Common Curriculum Basis in basic-level education in Brazil in the context of curriculum policies. Official documents and state discourse were analyzed using a dialectical methodology. Gramscian theory serves as the basis for the theoretical foundation of this work, which discusses whether the Common National Basis promotes emancipation or constitutes a regulatory instrument. Hegemonic structures were found in the Common Basis, as content selection testifies to one group’s vision of what should be taught – a regulatory exercise. The results indicate that salvaging reflective praxis in place of a culture of management – typical of a business approach to research in education policy – seems fundamental in reclaiming the value and importance of intellectuals organizing emancipatory projects.

This study sought to determine learning styles by sex and degree, as well as the most effective teaching strategies in higher education in Ecuador. With a focus group made up of edaphology students from the Private Technical University of Loja (UTPL), a descriptive study was conducted using the Honey-Alonso Learning Styles Questionnaire (CHAEA). The research also explored which teaching strategies had the greatest impact. Preferences by degree and sex were moderate to low for the four learning styles, and the most effective strategies were videos, lectures, and field-laboratory-classroom work. It was shown that students do not learn in just one way, but have different learning styles, and therefore strategies should be applied that respond to a wider range of learning capacities.

This study explores affective communication by a group of male university students in Tabasco (Mexico), on the basis of an analysis of their interaction in an academic setting that considers the language they use and their perception of social norms for males. To that end, a workshop was held in which they reflected on their interpersonal relationships, and their behavior was observed when they were among other men on college days. It was found that the participants’ affective communication is expressed through blows, shoves, and obscenities – which ties in with the heteronormative system of a patriarchal society. The emotions they show least in public are sadness and affection, as they see them as a sign of inferiority. It is concluded that university becomes a space in which affective interaction reproduces the hegemonic model of masculinity.

The Reforma Integral de la Educación Media Superior (RIEMS) in Mexico was elaborated in 2008 and its instrumentation and impact have been very limited, spite of a certain strength and institutional rooting that has transcended partisan differences in governmental administrations. Particularly, the Common Curricular Frame (MCC) has been unequal between the subsystems of this level and has had unsatisfying results. This study explores, through deep interviews of key Aguascalientes officials, the instrumentation of the MCC from the perspective of the intermediate instances of the systems management, public policy and educational change. Results show six problems: subsystems with unequal conditions of the teacher updating, dependence of the actors will in the absence of management conditions, limited profiles and attributions of the public officials, difficulty to understand the RIEMS, rigidity in the management instances and absence of an efficient agency to manage the implementation.

This study analyzed the psychometric properties of a scale to measure coping with cyber-bullying among university students. Non-probability sampling was used to select 346 higher education students from a public university in southern Sonora (Mexico). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was performed, reliability was tested with Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega, and the mean variance was analyzed. The results revealed a sustainable model for measuring coping with cyber-bullying that comprised three factors: seeking social support, evasive technical solution, and proactive technical solution. It is concluded that the scale has the necessary psychometric properties to measure this construct in university students.

The objective of this article is to estimate the relative weight of socioeconomic, academic and cultural factors in the learning disadvantages of indigenous elementary students in Mexico. To this end, hierarchical linear and Oaxaca-Blinder models were specified to analyze and decompose the learning gap between indigenous and non-indigenous students, on the basis of microdata from the National Plan for Learning Assessment (PLANEA) 2015. The main results are 1) beyond individual differences, many of these differences are explained by the percentage of indigenous students in schools (the compositional effect); 2) these differences are greatly reduced when socioeconomic and academic factors are controlled for (especially the former); and 3) although socioeconomic factors account for most of the gap, students’ academic trajectories and the characteristics of the schools they attend take on greater relevance in explaining differences in mathematics and the specific disadvantage experienced by students who learned an indigenous language first.

This article presents the results of a study carried out in three universities in Spain, Colombia, and France on the perceptions of disability support staff. In this descriptive study, individual interviews were conducted in which academic directors and disability support workers described how they perceived their work with respect to support provided to students and teachers. Three dimensions are discussed: a) culture; b) policies; and c) inclusive practices in the university. The analysis of the results highlights the obstacles and strengths identified within their work. To conclude, the article lists challenges that may guide future action in each context.

This article presents evidence of some factors affecting school dropout and attendance in indigenous students in junior high schools. First, a model was designed to estimate factors that affect the dropout gap using the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey. It was found that language is one of the main aspects affecting school dropout among indigenous students. A qualitative study was then conducted in junior high schools in Yucatán and Chiapas. The findings suggest that indigenous students who enter junior high school transition into an environment where the use of their language is reduced or non-existent, and they struggle to adapt. These difficulties affect their performance and ultimately lead them to drop out of school.

This study explores habits in ICT use among Spanish adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age, and identifies problematic uses in academic, social, and family settings. A concurrent mixed methodology is used; 906 questionnaires were given to adolescents, 135 interviews were conducted with young people, teachers, and school counselors, and 5 focus groups were established involving both youth and members of the education community. The results confirmed that ICT is widely present in the day-to-day lives of Spanish adolescents, and suggest that extensive use of ICT has negative impacts on young people’s academic, social, and family lives. It cannot be said that problematic ICT use has become ubiquitous, but it is a phenomenon worthy of study and activities aimed at prevention and awareness-raising should be envisaged.

This study is an approach to the problem of exclusion of disabled people by students from the country’s higher education institutions. An instrument was developed based on word association, in order to use the natural semantic network technique with a sample comprising 519 students from nine higher education institutions in Mexico, with the aim of gaining insight into their expressions with respect to disability by using an everyday trigger word. Although the findings reveal acceptance, stigma and misinformation still prevail, which may lead to discrimination.
