The immersion of societies in the digital and networked age has led to an increase of opportunities for young people to learn across countless face-to-face and online contexts. However, youth disaffection towards school remains high and access to opportunities across and within countries is remarkably unequal. This article builds on the results of two ethnographic case studies conducted in Spain and the learning stories narrated by 22 youth about their transitions across home, school, spare time, extracurricular activities, trips and virtual environments. The analysis of the stories show how young people establish connections and feel tensions across their experiences, creating continuities and discontinuities that are key for their learning. It also evidence that secondary school is only one node of the big sociocultural network through which young people learn. Building on the results, the conclusions raise the question: might a better understanding of learning trajectories favor a more inclusive educational system?

This article shows the results of research study conducted at the National University of La Rioja (Argentina). The object of this investigation was to inquire into the improvement of self-directed learning in students that made use of Project- Based Learning (PBL) strategies during the whole academic year. Students implemented these PBL strategies for the making of a transmedia documentary which was central to their training in a particular subject in the last year of the Social Communication track. The results were obtained through an experiment based on pretest and posttest (no control group used) using CIPA (a questionnaire for self-directed profile enquiry) in a group of students of Multimedia Communication at the National University of La Rioja. The experiment demonstrates remarkable improvement linked to the continued use of PBL strategies throughout the whole academic year.

The digital transformation of the audiovisual industry, as well as changes in the creation, distribution and marketing of content, have resulted in the need for people with new skills and professional profiles. However, the acquisition of such individuals is still not specifically stated in the current curriculums of the Audiovisual Communications Degree. After presenting the inception and development of this degree programme, as well as the effects of the technological convergence on this ecosystem, this article presents the results of a discussion group interview composed of specialists with acknowledged professional experience who also have a substantial amount of confirmed teaching experience. Their reflections allow for the identification and description of profiles, competencies and professional areas demanded by the contemporary market in which technological qualifications are simply not enough without the knowledge of the narrative bases on which stories are built.

In the search for new initiatives that could attract students, a group of professors proposed participation in the Facebook Challenge P2P organized by Edventure Partners. The selection of the participating students was done by establishing an interdisciplinary filter in the profiles that were to be selected. After the selection of students, we worked with a real briefing and budget, creating an original communicative space where an online campaign aimed at the prevention of extremism in the networks was developed. The campaign was more than successful since it got the first position in the European event and the third in the world; in addition, it earned the Prize for Teaching Innovation from the CEU San Pablo University.

Data Journalism, the successor of Investigative and Precision Journalism, acquires a new dimension in the Big Data environment that is prompting the redefinition, currently in progress, of a new professional profile: the data journalist. The opening of large databases, the use of new statistical software, and the constant renewal of visualization tools open the door to a journalistic specialization that requires modification of routines and specialized training. This emerging and expanding profile is undergoing uneven development in the Spanish media. With the objective of becoming familiar with its evolution, this research offers the results of an open questionnaire sent to Spanish data journalists that focused the object of study on three categories: routines and training, the use of sources, and visualization tools.  The main results seem to indicate that not all media have a specific section of data, that there are training deficiencies remedied by means of self-learning, that they use mostly public sources, and that visualizations are developed with a high level of creative freedom.

This study analyses the remarkable social impact of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in all areas, focusing on journalism. Different current initiatives of development and implantation of these new technologies in media of communication are collected and details advantages and disadvantages of the same from a professional and ethical point of view. Likewise, several studies have been taken into account, at an international level, on the subject treated and experts in the field have been consulted on the real viability of these technologies in the area in question. The result allows us to glimpse a new way of doing journalism, based on direct human-machine collaboration, in which the journalist must redefine himself to adjust to the new situation.
