Controlled enrichment experiments contribute to the interpretation of the archaeological record to the extent that they expand the knowledge about the chemical footprints left by specific substances. In this paper I present the results of experimentation with foods reported archaeologically in southern Central America to enrich modern ceramics, to which I tested for phosphates, carbonates, hydrogen potential (pH), carbohydrates, protein residues and fatty acids. The experimental groups involved: 1) enrichment by pouring broths of fish, clams, beans, manioc, peach palm and corn chicha for four weeks, and 2) differential enrichment by boiling fish, clams, manioc and beans, roasting corn and cocoa, and corn fermentation to produce chicha. The results indicate differentiations between the substances used and the types of experiments, which will be affected by post-depositional processes.

Resumen
The article aims to analyze the main socio-cultural changes in some small towns in the north of the canton the Esparza, province of Puntarenas. At present, they maintain a series of characteristics associated with rurality, in a context of urban growth in the Central Pacific Region, before this a view is provided from some of the inhabitants through an anthropological analysis and participant action research. The information collected indicates transformations in demography, landscape and productive activities. Within the contributions of the research, a description of the formation of these towns in the long term, since its foundation at the end of the 19th century, is developed. In addition, the importance of community organization in the construction of infrastructure is analyzed, as well as the characteristics of the economy. After analyzing this context, the discussion on the changes that have occurred in recent decades, linked to the concept of new rurality, is developed.

Resumen
This work examines archaeological indications of two potential phases at the Agua Caliente site. The findings were yielded by rescue operations at a sector declared Architectural Historic Monument. The earlier context showed burials radiocarbon dated to A.D. 700-900, with bone preservation. The later evidence was represented by constructions adjacent to the larger structures of the site. Earth fills were deposited probably at the onset of Period VI (A.D. 1000-1550), sealing the area where burials of the second half of Period V (A.D. 300-1000) laid. The stratigraphic succession indicates, by A.D. 900/1000, the beginning of the apogee in civil work as a result of the exaltation in cacical prestige, and with it the appropriation of a prior funerary space.

Resumen
This article studies three cases in which indigenous people from Teupasenti and Texiguat (Honduras) were accused of witchcraft in the seventeenth century, with the aim of demonstrating the continuity of the ancestral beliefs of these peoples in the context of the period of Hispanic domination. Specifically, the manifestations of the sacred mountain, the power of the winds and nahualism are analyzed in the statements made by the accused before the judicial authorities. The analysis technique used was historical ethnography, which is based on the current of historical anthropology. The results allow establishing that the indigenous people of Teupasenti and Texiguat in the seventeenth century had not abandoned their Mesoamerican beliefs, despite having adopted a socio-political organization imposed by the Castilians.

Resumen
It is shown that measurement of Index of State Density in rural territories of Costa Rica is an effective tool to determine effectiveness of State´s action to increase rural development. Costarican State has larger density and effectiveness in territories near San José, contrary to the peripheral territories. To understand this situation is key to execute effective actions to promote rural development, specially when the goal is to achieve social or cultural change.

Resumen
Currently, more than half of the country's inhabitants are concentrated in the Central Valley of Costa Rica and the growth of the city has generated great pressure on the archaeological heritage. Thanks to institutional efforts and current legislation, this process has been accompanied by a large number of archaeological impact assessments and rescue excavations, making this one of the most studied regions in the country. However, these investigations also have serious limitations since there is hardly ever a spatial delimitation of the sites or a regional perspective that allows general interpretations. In order to systematize part of this information, data was collected and generated from archaeological sites in the Virilla River basin. Despite the particular limitations of the sample, a wide range of published and unpublished documents is synthesized to achieve an anthropological interpretation of the pre-Columbian past and to have a clearer and more objective vision of the socio-cultural changes over time in a well-defined region.

Resumen
This article describes two neighboring architectural complexes that together form the monumental architecture of the Anita Grande site in the Línea Vieja region, Central Caribbean watershed of Costa Rica. We propose that these two complexes reflect the evolving chiefly status of the site’s residents. Ceramic analysis and radiometric data place the monumental construction to CE 950-1250, with evidence of occupations at the site in earlier periods. The information presented in this paper was collected from monitoring the site since 2004 and a field season of excavation in 2018. We conclude that the architectural construction at Anita Grande indicates chiefly authority, materialized through an initial design that was subsequently augmented, by a second complex 500 m away with aligned stone causeways.

Resumen
In the last 25 years, numerous archaeological investigations carried out in the surroundings of Culebra Bay, located in the Southern Sector of Greater Nicoya, have achieved a significant amount of 14C dating that have complemented the chronological estimates assigned to the sites through the ceramics. In light of the radiometric data, it is possible to debate the relative antiquity of various ceramic types that have been considered as “markers” of the Ometepe period (1350-1550 AD). This article discusses the 14C data corresponding to some archaeological sites located around the bay, the contexts in which they were obtained, their ceramic association, and data about other areas of northwestern Costa Rica. With this information, everything indicates that the human population around the Culebra bay was very low or null when the Spanish arrived to the area in the 16th century.
