This paper explores the coding of arguments in San Felipe Santiago Otomi (Oto-Manguean > Oto-Pamean), or Ñätho, in data gathered from an oralcorpus consisting of 1 hour of recordings, as well as from a written corpus consisting of a New Testament translation. By using nine different criteria (word order, person-marking in the verb, number marking in the verb, antipassive construction, middle construction, relativization, wh- interrogation, causative construction, and zero anaphora), it is shown that the coding of arguments seems to obey participant animacy rather than thematic roles by themselves. The data presented are also discussed under the government and binding approach, as well as a typological approach.

This research addresses the issue of reference continuity in narrative texts in the Guarijío language, which belongs to the Uto-Aztecan language family. The objective is to describe the various referential mechanisms that codify different participants/referents, and the distribution and degree of topicality they may present within  discourse. To this end, (i) a particular analysis of the inventory of referential mechanisms in the language is carried out, followed by (ii) a sample analysis of the phenomenon in three narrative texts that detail how speakers manage to carry out referential continuity in this language.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the functioning of haz de cuenta (que) as a discourse marker considering the influence of the social factors: region, gender, age, and education level. In specific, our interests are: (i) to determine which is the geographic distribution of this discourse marker in different varieties of Spanish, (ii) to describe the influence of gender, age, and education level when this marker is used in Mexico City’s Spanish, and (iii) to characterize its discourse functions. For such purposes, three corpora are analyzed, PRESEEA (2014), Ameresco (Albelda & Estellés 2021), and Corpus Sociolingüístico de la Ciudad de México (Martín Butragueño & Lastra 2011, 2012, 2015). The results show that haz de cuenta (que) is a discourse marker characteristic of the variety of Mexico’s Spanish and has four pragmatics functions: (i) exemplification, (ii) reformulation, (iii) enactment, and (iv) continuative. Furthermore, in Mexico City’s Spanish, this marker is used more frequently by younger speakers and medium education level speakers, while gender apparently has not a particular influence because women and men show a similar average of use. Finally, it is concluded that haz de cuenta (que) is a dialect mark of Mexico Spanish that has had a major development over the last years.

This paper analyzes occurrences of the Spanish compound past [“present perfect”, PPC] in interviews to personalities of the political and cultural life of Mexico and Spain. The choice of the PPC in these dialects is often characterized by its codification of imperfective situations or situations that denote current relevance depending on the case, thus countering the Simple Past that comprises situations without connection to speech time (ST).Instead, in this paper, it is claimed that the pattern of choice of the PPC ought to be understood as the codification of generic situations without an explicit indication of its possible yet not obligatory connection to ST. In this way, a more cohesive description is attained, both for the cases in which the connection to ST is explicit or implicit and for those in which that connection is ambiguous or openly denied, despite being codified in the PPC.

This paper presents an examination of the theory of the word and lexicon as proposed in Lara (2004), and developed in Lara (2006). This theory shall be subjected to empirical verification since its criteria and methods will be applied to Yucatec Maya in order to determine the word as a linguistic unit in this language. First, the arguments of the autor about why a theory of the word is necessary are exposed, including a summary of the theory and its methods. Subsequently, criteria for determinig this linguistic unit will be applied to Yucatec Maya, according to the suggested methods of the theory. I consider this work to be a first approximation in determining this unit of analysis for this language.

Mexico, as other nations, uses Natural Protected Marine Areas (ANPM) for conservation purposes of the natural processes of the species subject to fishing. Unfortunately, in their Decree processes, on some occasions, due attention has not been paid to social and economic development of the communities that inhabit them. The present work finds out through questioning the grade of participation of the fishermen in the designation of the ANPM. Using surveys in Likert scales, the perception of bordering fishermen of two ANPM in the state of Baja California Sur was analyzed with regard if they were considered or not in the statement of the ANPM. Mechanisms are suggested to recognize the value of the knowledge of fishermen as a key element that encourages the sustainability of fishing and that together they manage an improvement in the quality of life of fishermen in ANPM.
