The development and evolution of prose poetry in Costa Rica is described and analyzed in view of the fact that critics have not given it the attention it deserves. A discussion of historical, conceptual and theoretical aspects, together with the European origins of this genre, provides the basis to explore its appearance around the end of the 19th century, and its later development up to the present time.

The basis of this study is that all human beings are part of the semiosis of social reproduction, of their existential environment. Using the notion of semiosphere (Lotman), and conceptual derivations such as that of text, in a simplified sense, three aspects are analyzed regarding the social experience of an individual: the phenomenon of geographical and cultural othemess; the city as a situational and ideological sign, including its literary treatment; and the awareness of contrasts in a country's historical future.

Resumen
Since its foundation in 1703, St Petersburg-Petrograd-Leningrad has become a recurrent myth of Russian culture. The city has been the symbol of the westernization of Russia. Different studies on this phenomenon have been limited to literary research on this mythmaking, but no approaches have been offered by film studies. This article offers an analysis of the depiction of the city in two soviet films which offer new versions of the aforementioned myth: The Overcoat: A Film-Play in the Manner of Gogol/Shinel’ Kino-pesa v manere Gogolia, (Kozintsev and Trauberg, 1926) and in The Overcoat/Shinel’ (Batalov, 1956). Throughout Gogol’s work, soviet adaptations reveal the way in which cultural heritage was relevant and how a myth can make sense to a society that needs to define its identity.

In this paper I will establish similarities between Jorge Luis Borges’ “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis, Tertius” (“Tlön”) and the graphic novels Les Cités Obscures by François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters. “Tlön” is largely grounded in the ‘as if’ principle: ‘If idealism governs reality, then…’ The ‘as if’ allows Borges to disjoin and conjoin again, the result being an utopian world erected for epistemic purposes; it is in this ‘otherness’ that the explanatory power lies. The idea of describing thoroughly another world in Tlön fashion has been developed in Les Cités Obscures, a series of graphic novels produced since 1982 by François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters. Schuiten and Peeters lavishly use architectural décor for the setting of their stories. The city of Brussels, slightly displaced into Brüsel, appears in most of the albums. By means of extrapolating elements of the city’s rich architectural heritage, the authors have managed to create a universe of their own. The procedure is similar to schematic fictions: general types are deprived of unnecessary traits to make it easier to single out constituent elements. Like Tlön, Les Cités are a re-cognisable world. They direct our regard upon cultural practices, architectural styles and history by means of superimposing transparencies, a well-known method in which Borges excelled.

Resumen
The serial publication of The artificial man (1910) by Horacio Quiroga represents a departure from previous literary traditions in Argentina. Taking the theme of the construction of an artificial human being, with reference to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and The Future Eve by Villiers De l’Isle-Adam, Quiroga’s short novel poses questions about the status of science in general and of medical knowledge in particular. Whereas previously, in Argentina, such scientific knowledge had become manifest in social and disciplinary regulations, this brief folletín represents a transgression: illness appears displaced from the doctor who judges the social evil to the doctor who reaches the limit of self-destruction. The artificial man also presents innovative narrative techniques. For example, contemporary analyses of Quiroga’s work now consider the influence of films on his literary production from the 1920’s, especially his fantastic stories, written at the same time as his work as a critic of cinema. His novel of 1910 represents an early example of the appropriation of film, for cinema now becomes the basis for his language. His editing films, uses of caché and temporary breaks make this folletín a touchstone for initiating, at the beginning of the 20th century, a new dialogue between cinema and literature in the region of el Río de la Plata.

Resumen
This paper studies Silvina Ocampo’s stories as specular literature. La furia y otros cuentos presents a particularly interesting case of reflexivity, displayed in various combinations of iconic, thematic, intertextual, intratextual, stylistic and self-referential elements. Given that any reflection, whether of light, human beings, or inanimate things, always involves an image, in her stories mirrors not only double or multiply reflections; mirrors also modify what they reflect. While Ocampo’s work may be seen as a faithful but disconcerting reflection of ordinary human beings and events, it also reveals unknown aspects of a world we had first seen as familiar and known.

A description is provided, from the perspective of typological functionalism, of the incongruence between semantic and syntactic valence, when there are more arguments than those predicted by the verb. Thus causative clauses are described along with the strategies used to construct applicatives as well as the dative of interest, dative shift and impersonal verb constructions.
